Cash is the best and only way, as far as I'm concerned. Of course, even with cash, you take the risk of it be counterfeit.

Cash is king. Cashiers checks are no more secure than personal checks anymore. If cash isn't an option I would recommend the following:

  • Get picture/photocopy of the buyer ID
  • Make sure it matches the check
  • Get a picture or write down the plate number of the vehicle he/she shows up in
  • Let them come pick up the car and signed over title AFTER the personal check clears. In the past I've allowed the buyer to take the vehicle and provided a bill of sale but no title until the check has cleared.

That process has worked well for me. I wouldn't accept any electronic payment means (paypal for example).

The testing pens are cheap insurance against counterfeit.. Luckily U.S. currency is getting much easier to check.

True, but those pens are not fool proof.

The best way to avoid the problem of fake checks or currency is to do a direct wire transfer of funds from the buyer's bank account to yours. No cash to handle, no checks to handle.

Just about anything can be counterfeited today, including newer currency. Cashiers checks, money orders (even Postal money orders) can be faked. Personal checks are certainly a no-go.

For authentication of cash, UV lights can be used to make the embedded strip in bill glow (another security measure to verify authenticity). The currency amount repeated on the strip should match the currency on the bill. Use UV light in conjunction with testing pens, verification of watermarks, and of color shifting ink to get an overall sense of authenticity.

Only the experts at the Secret Service would likely be able to tell the high end fakes from the authentic Federal notes.

A check? Heck no. It takes no effort writing a check with insufficient funds in accout, and the account could have been long closed. Glad you knew better to do that. So, did the buyer actually bring hard cash? I've always wondered if that's very safe to do. I guess I would go with the wire transfer. Don't see how one can be defrauded that way.

Meet the buyer at a bank or a credit union. They bring cash, you bring the car and the title. They count it out and it gets run through the bank's counterfeit bill detector. Once the money is proven good, you sign over the title, notarize the bill of sale, and hand over the keys. Take the money and deposit it so you can't get jumped and ripped off.

The deal is in public and on neutral ground. Cameras are everywhere and no legitimate buyer/seller is likely to balk at the locale.
