Salt Lake City vs Denver vs ?? -- Where to live for a year?

New to the forum, so 'hi everyone.'

I'm at a time in my life where I can move anywhere...anywhere that has a decent sized city within commutable distance (have to pay the bills.) Plan to live there for at least a year. Plan to move by October. My interests are photography, hiking, running, camping, snow skiing, and very soon--4 wheeling. Planning to buy a JKU in the next month.

Up to now I've been thinking Denver. I know there are a lot of good trails within a decent drive. The problem I didn't foresee until now is that from what I'm reading by mid-November a lot of the trails might be snowed in. So then I'm hanging out until May/June next year waiting to try out my new wrangler. Is that information correct? If so, where are the nearest trails that wouldn't be snowed in?

So I've also thought about Salt Lake City. Great skiing within a short distance. But know nothing about what kind of 4 wheeling is nearby. I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly) that there are some desert trails in Utah that wouldn't be as affected by snow...

What other cities should I be considering?

Thanks in advance!

p.s.

I'm in software in case that factors into your recommendations.
