Surgery - Hell yes I'm scared!!

Well, the day is fast approaching me....I have a (L) shoulder surgery scheduled for 7:30 am in the morning (8-8). the Dr. told me I tore (insert big word here), in the back of my shoulder, this caused the (insert big word here) fluid to drain out from around the ball & socket joint, the drained fluid then caused a cyst in the muscle in the back of my shoulder, as well as causing a bone-on-bone type action in the shoulder joint itself.

remedy - Friday morning the Dr. said he would go in the back side of my shoulder, clean / drain the cyst in the muscle first. He is then going to dislocate my shoulder, shave the bone down on the ball part of the joint. Insert new cartlidge into the socket part of the joint. he will the pop the shoulder back together, fix the torn (insert big word here), and sew me up.

I get to look forward to 3 week minimum of wearing a cast / sling type thing with the brace that goes under the elbow and props against my side. So my arm is going to be up at my side (hold your hands like you were riding a bicycle - thats how my left arm will be for 3 weeks).
When it comes to pain, I am a big ole WUSSY! I will cry like alittle girl.
HELL YES I'M SCARED!!!!

I've had surgery before, I shattered my leg bone in a horse accident, after the surgery when they woke me up, it hurt like hell. Then I passed out again from the drugs, and slept for two days. After that, just kept my scripts in me, and I didn't care that I was in pain. I was high as a kite. You at least get to take it easy right?

It's gonna hurt, just remember pain is weakness leaving the body
I'm curious how big the cut will be, it's amazing how small they do their work in now a days. Gall bladder removal 20 years ago used to be a 2ft long cut down the back and under the ribs, now it's just two tiny holes. My MiL had both hips replaced, she was up and walking in a couple of days and back to playing tennis and golf in 3 months 4 days a week, she was 79, 5 months after that she was in Ecuador in the rain forest on safari with my son as his graduation present, she still ran his ass in to the ground . The stuff they do now a days is fantastic, the only thing I would worry about is asking for help when you need to go number one or number two...

I will still have a good hand / arm to use. I have never had to use both arms and hands to wipe my butt, but I do use both to wrangle the one eyed mexican mamba when I go to take a leak!!

I'd worry about them putting you under and cutting your leg off or something like that by accident. I think I read somewhere that the odds of that are fairly slim though. Now that I think about it didn't A&E or one of those channels have a whole TV show about surgery mishaps? I'll Google and find out. That's pretty amazing that they could find enough footage to make a whole TV series. Maybe it actually happens alot.

I'll quit rambling. Good luck.

I bet that makes him feel a whole lot better. Relax and do what they tell in post-op so you don't re injure yourself.

I just remember waking up from my knee surgery on morphine. I didn't care what they did, felt to good. Been a year and a half, doc says my arm may grow back someday.

Don't sweat it, you'll do fine.

I have had my (r) knee worked on 4 times from the age of 17 - 23. The first 2 were just scope surgery, # 3 was more invasive 9about a 3" scar on the outside of the (r) knee...#4..now that was a whole new ball of wax...complete replacement...took the old knee joint out, sawed the ends off the upper and lower bones in my leg...drove SS rods into the bones, and attached the new knee joint..everything was held together with a "halo" that went from upper thigh to my ankle..rods, pins, screws sticking out every where for 6 months, and then I got to wear a cast from my butt cheek to my big toe for 3 more months...I know it's not as major as having the ole "bean" worked on, but it was pretty major to me...good lawd it hurt....That's my biggest fear here..me and pain don't go well together..

How did your surgery turn out? I mean, did they get all the tumor and all is well?

With warm wishes you and Scout are giving me...why would I worry??

if I wake from the shoulder surgery and end up having to ride the round foot cart because my legs are gone...I'm gonna roll my butt to look for you two first off!!

Make sure you use a permanent marker on the correct shoulder stating "This One!"

The funny thing is they actually do mark you up so they don't remove the wrong kidney or whatever...
I remember having a cyst from an ingrown hair from the top of my butt cheeks, the naval hospital shot me up with demerol and then gave me a spinal. I was feeling NO pain at all but I do remember as I was laying down on my stomach next to 10 others having the same surgery as they dropped the bottom part of the table down so my butt was sticking up and out in the air 'the first zipper I hear I'm getten up and crawling outta here'...

This is the most credible source I could find on the internet about medical mishaps. I'm still looking for more...

Seriously, will be thinking of ya tomorrow.
