Tell me Windows 8 gets easier....

I picked up a new laptop today and I'm using Windows 8.1 extensively for the first time. I realize it's probably polarizing, you either love it or hate it...I don't want to start a debate...I'm just wondering if it's fairly easy to make the switch from Vista? Anyone have any encouraging words?

There is a program that can disable Metro, or so I hear. I refuse to use it. I'm plenty happy with Win7.

I'll see what I can find out, thanks. I didn't want to go to windows 8 but it's either that or a Mac, and I can't use a Mac for work. Figured I'd be better off just sucking it up and learning it but I can't even navigate simple settings.

Soon I'll be posting in the "What did you do to your JK today.." thread that I drove over a brand new computer.

Yeah when I bought my last laptop I ordered it without an OS. But that's because I already have two copies of Win7.

You'll figure it out. I love Windows 8. Imagine your "start menu" as apps on an iPhone or droid. I had to google some things and I'm still learning as I go but I love it.

Get a Mac and run a virtual machine with Windows for work or do the opposite. You can share files across both operating systems transparently.

Exactly. I has to transition to windows 8 while trying to finish an 80 page thesis. It takes getting used to but I really like it now, much better than android or apple. I actually get frustrated at work now with windows 7.

I'm still using Windows XP Pro at home. Until there's a reason for me to switch I'm going to keep using it. Bill Gates will have to make his billions off someone else.

It does have a touchscreen. I appreciate the input from everyone and will definitely look into "classic shell". We have a desktop at home with Windows 8 that our IT guys set up to run similar to Vista (desktop is the default). I'm guessing that's kinda what Classic Shell does?

For what it's worth, day 2 with Windows 8 and I'm not quite as frustrated with it. I'm hoping that I'll eventually end up liking it.

Update 2: There's not even a way to simply click "home" when you're online to get back to your search page. Why would they mess with something as ingrained as the way Google displays?
