The Best and Worst TJ wranglers Manufactured

The best of the best as follows:

2003 and 2004 with the upgraded 4 speed automatic, 4.0 engine, with the optional Dana 44 rear diff, is just bullet proof.
These years have the capability of 300,000 miles or more, with no major repairs needed.
These have earned a rating of 5 STARS *****

The next best are the 2005 and 2006 as follows:

These have all of the upgrades of the 2003 and 2004, but have a serious OIL PUMP DRIVE GEAR FAILURE in the 4.0 engines, with no current Chrysler/Jeep known update repair. So this has down graded there rating somewhat.
These have earned a 4 STARS ****.

The next best are the 1997, through 1999 as follows:

These have been in general well built, and also somewhat bullet proof, with the 4.0 engine.
These have also earned a 4 STAR ****

The year 2000, is the WORST ever built as follows:

This one equipped with the 4.0 engine, cracks cylinder heads, has a 3 speed automatic transmission that has ongoing pump failures, cracking exhaust manifolds, a weak radiator that will burst at any time.
THIS IS THE WORST YEAR WRANGLER, AND SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN MANUFACTURED, WHAT A PIECE OF JUNK!!!!!!!
This year has earned a minus -1 STAR.

Good summary.

I got my 97 TJ Sport in 1996. It had several items unique to that 1/2 year, replaced in later 1997. Some items genuinely seemed to be replaced with cheaper lighter alternatives - the control arms, for instance. Maybe they were trying to make a good first impression.
