Things to do/see along I-40 and Southern CA?

Getting ready to roadtrip across the country! Leaving from Wilmington NC and going to the end of I40 in Cali then up a lil ways to drop some horses off (reason for the trip, delievering some horses in different spots and picking some up in S cal to bring back to NC) and taking highway 1 (i think) down the coast to San Diego, staying there a few days then turning around to head back to Wilmington Any ideas on little stuff we can stop and see/do? With the horses we can't spend too long parked anywhere, maybe an hour tops depending on the heat. But I hate just driving for 3 days straight!

You're going right through the Mohave Desert... take your Jeep out on some dunes! There are many places you can just turn off the highway and drive straight out into the desert from the highway.

awww, i wish! I'll be hauling horses though so no Jeep Truck would be fun, but I'm betting the ponies would all be pretty ticked off if I left them standing in the desert, inside a metal trailer for a few hours..yup, definitely be pissed Thinking more along the lines of roadside attractions, cool views/picture spots, stuff like that?
