Things You Hate...Road Rage Edition

Tried this before a couple years ago, so we'll see how it goes.

Hate it when I come up behind a car on the highway going well under the limit and as I go to pass them they accelerate to well above the limit.

I hate when somone cuts me off just to slow down.

On a side note my 2 year old has developed road rage, he yells go or come on at slow drivers.

Tried to pass a slowpoke driving a long time in the fast lane by going around him in the slow lane and he speeds up to cut me off. I had flashed my lights once (daylight) to no avail. So I hang behind him until two other cars pass by him in the slow lane with a car in front of him so he's boxed off. I jump in behind them tight so he can't cut me off and the guy is jumping up and down and honking his horn at me as I go by. WTF?

Not my video or cometary but I wish cops would do this type of thing more often. Slow car in fast lane escort.

Amen for NJ. It's hostile territory here. Right lane is faster 80% of the time. People merge from on ramp to the left lane in one fell swoop. Then do 60.

Slow drivers in the left lane.
People who can't figure out how a 4-way stop works
The 3 jackwads who turn left after the arrow turns red
People who try to merge into traffic without getting up to speed first

People who bypass the "left turn only" lane and make a left turn from the "go straight" lane because they don't want to wait behind all the cars in the "left only" lane.

I can only hope that karma catches up to these folks.

I agree with all of you on the idiots out there driving in these ways. I started a bad habit when I had my 2000 chevy Z71 with a 6" suspension lift and 35's. I called it breezing. There may be other names for it...and I do know it was / is a stupid thing to do. It does get the attention of those...

When I passed them, I would get as close to the line that seperated our lanes. Not on the line and not over it. Having a big vehicle that close to their side usually made them slow down / back off. I dont do it anymore as my Jetta TDI is not intimidating to anything other than a mouse. Wont do it in the jeep either. I am much wiser and older to do stuff like that now.

It all started because of sooo many people out there driving in ways you described

Mopeds. They never stay to the right and usually never do the posted limit.

People who pull out from a side road and take forever to speed up, knowing they made you hit the brakes. I'd really like to do a pit meneuver to them.

Texting while driving. I do admit to texting sitting at a light though. Several local towns starting to ban it even though I don't really see a way to enforce it.

In heavy traffic, people who stay in the right lane even thought it is ending, and try to push in at the last possible second. I get the finger or followed/tailgated now and then because I won't let them get in front of me.

People who stay so close to the person in front of them that they are constantly tapping their brakes.

People who pass in a no passing zone on a curvy road, it endangers them, me, and any unfortunate sob that is coming toward us.

People who bicycle onroad for recreation, particularly in anything above a 35mph zone. That should be a law.

Just became illegal (enacted 7/1/13) in Virginia.

Coming back from vacation (VA Beach), we were stopped from congestion b/c the hwy goes from 4 lanes to 2 in less than a mile (to go in a tunnel). Everybody keeps zipping over to the left lane, even though we have been passing merge signs for +/- 1/2 mile, in stop and go mind you - we all know what's happening. Having had enough, I scooched over into that lane, but only 50% or so, still keeping my spot in traffic. They continued to zip on and pass me on the hard shoulder. Then the other folks around caught on, namely a nice feller pulling a camper with a dodge 1500, and we all scooched over, me completely in the left lane (driver side tires on paint) but still pacing the rest in a giant half-wedge, like "/". The guy behind me moved up so nobody could steal my spot and cut him off, and wouldn't ya know it? Traffic started to free up.

I want to type this out as delicately as possible. It's extremely hard to explain while typing and for people to not get offended. No offense intended. Just trying to explain.

It isn't that because you moved over you freed up traffic. You only freed up traffic in front of you. Your actions caused more traffic behind you.

There are mathematical equations that show that the 4 lanes to 2 is best handled when people occupy all lanes at all times and merge at the end with what's called the zipper effect. One person from left, one from right, one left, one right so forth and so on. All tho slowing down from whatever posted speed limit due to having to create a safer gap to allow that person to merge in front of you. If done correctly and uniformly it allows traffic to flow smoother and more efficiently. That's the problem. "Correctly and uniformly. "

In today's social mindset, it's me first then you, I don't care about the people behind me. Just don't impact me. I get this daily from homeowners at work. Don't put that in front of my house, put it in front of his. Or more direct to this example, don't merge in front of me. Go behind me. Well guess what's behind you, someone saying the same thing.

There is a reason why all major tunnel exits from manhattan emphasize the zipper and installed lights to force people to go one car per lane per light. It forcibly creates that zipper maneuver without asking people to be nice and just do it.

Sadly it isn't going to magically happen. There are asshoels out there that intentionally just disregard everything and want to get there first before everyone else. But using the given roadway within the limits intended isnt wrong.

Think of this, if everyone moved over the second they saw the first merge sign what would happen. The choke point would no longer be where that lane ends instead it would be where that first sign is, still causing traffic. What then, would u, knowing the roadway, knowing that sign is coming up and having moved over preemptively, complain about the people that waited till the first sign to move over? Devils advocate there. Just a different way to look at it.

TL;DR

Lanes end at point designed by traffic specialists, with intentions for everyone to use all lanes provided, and utilize best traffic prevention techniques, sadly nobody does. That guy riding the end of a lane till it merges isnt being an ass, the ass is the people that don't know how to merge appropriately.

While I appreciate your attention to universal traffic laws, moving out of traffic into a merging lane only to proceed several hundred yards and merge again is a moving violation in most every state, including Virginia (excessive lane change).

Yes, were the morons to understand how to merge, things would be fine... They don't. I drove trucks commercially for 10 years in a city with 4 million people without 1 incident; pretty sure I know what I am doing. When folks see they HAVE to merge and cannot focus on 'me first', they begin to properly merge as it becomes apparent the whole pack wins together or loses together. When they see a wide-open lane next to them, they start thinking if I if I if I… It removes the individuality from their thought process, at least 90% of the time. Thanks, though.

FYI - careful offering an opinion in a thread based on a premise of your opinion, some mods will tell you "nobody asked for your opinion" in this thread based on opinions.

1. When people cut you off or box you in
2. People speed up and pass you and get in front of you just to go 5 mph

I guess the closest I ever came to road rage was a young couple on the highway. I was admittedly going 10-15 mph over the limit...they were going 10 under and decided to box me in and keep me there. There was no way to pass on the right and they decided to deliberately hold me on the left by slowly driving beside other traffic or speeding up and preventing a pass when an opportunity presented itself on the right (numerous times). And the whole time they keep looking back at me and laughing about it. For a moment I thought about following them slowly to where ever they were driving and having a "talk" with the boy.....but I thought that if I started following them they would be the ones calling the police saying I was following them and I would be the one to get in trouble...so I thought better of it and tweedle dee and tweedle dum lived another day.

I have no problems with people doing the speed limit or under, however they need to do so in the Right hand lane. Drives me nuts slow drivers in the left.

Me too; and I'm one of those that are going under the speed limit on the 80mph toll road that I take twice a month (sorry, but I just won't push the Jeep to 80), but I'm always in the right lane. Traffic is never heavy on it either, so there's always room to go around.

When I'm driving on my gravel roads...and I slow down and pull to the side to permit the on-coming car to pass safely (and save both our windshields from potential rock chips)...and they DON'T slow down OR pull to the side.

What exactly do they think I'm doing? Treating them special because they already think they're special?
