Thompson abandons White House bid

Quote:
Former Sen. Fred Thompson on Tuesday ended his run for the presidency, coming off the heels of a disappointing third-place finish in South Carolina's GOP primary and heading into the showdown state of Florida next week.

Today I have withdrawn my candidacy for president of the United States," Thompson said in a statement.

"I hope that my country and my party have benefited from our having made this effort. Jeri and I will always be grateful for the encouragement and friendship of so many wonderful people."

Thompson entered the race in September, long after his Republican rivals had announced their candidacies and began raising money. His campaigning style was criticized as lackluster, and he was never able to capitalize on the anticipation supporters had built before he announced that he was getting into the race.

Thompson was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1994 and represented Tennessee for eight years.

Short of cash and sinking in national polls, Thompson had staked his hopes on South Carolina, where a strong showing could have reinvigorated his flagging campaign.

Thompson played to the voters as a staunch conservative and a son of the South. While he did draw some evangelical voters from one-time Baptist preacher and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, it wasn't enough to pull him into contention for the nomination.

He finished with 16 percent of the vote. Sen. John McCain won Saturday's contest with 33 percent, followed by Huckabee with 30 percent.

"He's really been good lately, but it's too late," CNN analyst Bill Bennett said of Thompson after South Carolina returns started to come in. "If you're a Southern conservative and you can't make it in South Carolina, it's over."

Earlier, Thompson finished third in Iowa, fifth in Michigan and Nevada, sixth in New Hampshire and a distant second to former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in Wyoming.

Thompson teased Republicans all last summer after forming a fundraising committee for a possible presidential campaign on June 1.

When he announced in September that he was formally entering the race, it was well after the other Republicans had launched their campaigns, and analysts said the late entry may have hurt him.

Thompson is an actor best known for his role as District Attorney Arthur Branch on NBC's "Law & Order."

Five candidates remain in the Republican race -- McCain, Huckabee, Romney, Rep. Ron Ron Paul of Texas and former New York Mayor Rudy Rudy Giuliani.

Giuliani has largely skipped the early voting states to focus on the January 29 primary in Florida and the delegate-rich races in the "Super Tuesday" primaries February 5
Seemed to be a good one =/

Yeah, the votes just were not there. I'm kind of afraid to say it, but I think I'm gonna start backing Obama.

Exclamation

Why don't the American people accept real change in the government for once, instead of having the same type of people lying an telling us what we want to hear. There is a Republican canidate out there that actually will answer the peoples' questions TRUTHFULLY.

And who would THAT be?

Politician and truth don't really belong in the same sentence. Too many are concerned with spewing what that audience at the time wants to hear.

Occuna, unfortunately it is not Ron Paul. He only says the same thing over and over again. That if we pull out of the rest of the world everything in the constiution will make everything allright. He doesn't have any answers for what happens when we stop helping everyone and they decide that they are going to either not have trade programs with us or they tariff US goods coming in to their countries to a point where our trade deficit goes thru the roof. Which will make prices even higher on the home front. He is not saying what he would do when under his white house we pull ever soldier we have back onto US soil. When after about a year we have no more border problems and have too many soldiers sitting around doing nothing so congress starts to cut budgets for defense and we end up in Clinton hell again like we were during 9/11. Unfortunately Mr. Paul was born about 200 years too late. Because his idea's really are antiquated for today's world.

Thank you.
Just think what gas prices would be like if we weren't in the Middle East at all.

And who exactly should be in charge(in theory) of being President. I don't think that if we were to pull most of our troops out that there would be some major continental crisis over there. And if there was, things and weapons are a lot different nowadays. A Hitler scenario a highly unlikely. The real issue here should be the American people being in control of their government and their money. Noone should or will tell me how I spend my hard earned(taxed) money. Would we also really be accepting of the idea of a foreign miltary base being bulit here with the bleesings of your elected officials. Just making my point not making enemies.

Fred was my choice. I just want anyone but Hilary at this point. I liked the Bushes and Jeb was a great Governer here in Florida, but we need someone other than the Bushes or the Clintons in the white house for a change.

No enemies being made here my friend. We just have serious problems that need serious people to solve them and unfortunately I don't see where Ron Paul can be that guy. Hell no we would never let a foreign military setup shop on our soil. However there are numeroud countries around the world that would be very very very uneasy if we were to pull our military bases out of their country. Just think how Japan would feel about China if we were to leave. What about Germany and Russia if we were to close down there. Having the US flag positioned strategically around the world goes a long way to promoting peace just because more countries know the fist of the US can come down with a vengience.

I also fully support what you say about Americans being in charge of our own government and the decisions it makes. However our govt has gotten so big over the last few decades that it's almost unmanageable by the ones we've elected to do so. So we must put someone in office that will shrink the government while still keeping the military as strong as ever.

And we all need to remember that an elective capitalist democracy might not be the best govt on earth....But it's damn sure the best that's been invented yet.
