Tried my hand at welding

Well today I tried my hand at stick welding. I have never welded anything before and I didn't think I did too bad for a first timer. I thought it was pretty cool and it made me want to build something for the Jeep.

The beads look a bit like poop. But that is ok. As a welder in the Navy all I can say is that you need to make sure you get good penetration and then clean the welds up with a grinder.

A bit more practice and you will be building your own roll cage.

If you are looking to make a rear bumper for your jeep look at rokmen. They make great products but they also have a kit to build your own.

Your welds will go better and smoother if you clean the material really good before you start, no rust ,looks good for first time I think my first 3 tries i wound up stuck to the pipe but that was a lot of welds ago ,thats definitley a practice thing.

the trick to remember is to stare straight at the weld, dont let a sissy helmet obstruct your view. also, keep your hand just behind your weld so you can monitor the heat penetration

Welding becomes an addiction, you'll start welding anything you can find that most people would just bolt on.

Very true Jerry. Especially when its as easy as turning the gas on and pulling the trigger. Oh and something else that is just as addicting is plasma cutting.
