Un-Pink the Ruger LCP

So last Christmas I got a carry pistol that I had my eye on for a while. Our local gun store was running a special on them and had this one for a great price when compared to the others in the case. Only catch was its Pink. Jokingly I pointed out that it would be holstered in my pocket and no one would ever see it unless something bad was going to happen then perhaps a dude with a pink gun pointed at them would give me an extra second or two. Well under the tree that year was a small box with Ruger printed on the side and I tore into it just as excited as the year I got a gameboy when I was a kid. I open the box and and to my surprise and my family's amusement I pull out the Pink gun. We all get a good laugh and fast forward to now I don't really care it's pink. The only thing is when I go to the range pulling a pink pocket pistol out is libel to get you laughed out of the place. So in my desire for practice on the diminutive .380 I need to make a change. I found some Krylon Fusion paint that advertises it bonds to plastic. I thought about Duracoat or another brand like that but it almost costs as much as the gun did to have done and the do-it-yourself kit looks complicated so I opted for a rattle can. The Fusion paint doesn't require a base coat or primer so my concern over building up or loosing the detail on the grip would be minimized. I also chose a flat paint as gloss would worry me about slippage with sweaty hands. I disassembled the pistol and removed as much of innards as I was comfortable I could put back in. Prep work was to clean the plastic with ammonia based cleaner so I used lysol to remove the grease and oils. After it dried I put painters tape inside to cover the sear mechanism and the mag release spring that I left inside. I pushed out the pin slightly and rolled a piece of tape to stop paint from getting inside the pin holes as they are a tight fit. I sprayed one side with a few coats to make sure all the nooks and crannies got covered and turned it around to get the other angles I didn't intentionally aim inside the frame but I did allow the overspray to cover all the edges for even coverage. Allow to dry for an hour and then flip then repeat. It's really important to let the paint dry really well before you play with it or you risk smudge marks. I let it cure by putting down two nails and then laying the rail side down on them so no exposed paint would stick. When the paint is nice and dry check for quality and then re-assemble. I went with a deep Red color that would cover the pink well but I think any color would have worked. So far I am really pleased with the results the flat red with the flat black hardware really pops. As to how durable the paint is time will tell. Thanks for reading.

LOL!!! A couple of years ago I was looking and handguns in Cabela's in PA and after talking with the salesman, he took out a "Lady Smith", a little lighter, no hammer, and pink. Ugh!!! It didn't impress me at all...but then, I'm not into pink.

I like that you were able to change the color, and get what you wanted for less dinero. Smiths are not that cheap. I talk to my bro in law, rent a gun at the range, figure out what I want, then go to a gun show. I saved 120 dollars buying a Ruger at a gun show, over the range I frequent. Even with the member discount, it was more there than at the show.
