Use the darn search

Thread after thread are being made for the exact same thing when there is the same exact thread asking the same exact question just down the page. IMO filling the page with 12 threads that have the same question prevents useful information from being shared. Let say one is asking a question about a step in how to replace an alternator or something like that and that person has work tomorrow or whatever and there are 3 threads asking about what tires to get, then another 5 threads asking about what lift they should get. etc.. and that alternator question is at the end of the line.. will you even see it?

It would be nice if we can add a check box that you have to check before you can submit a new thread that says "I have searched with no results" or something like that and then the link to the search page underneath it. What do u all think?

Perhaps even relocating and resizing the search button so its even more obvious is nice too?

If you don't want to read a thread or help someone out you don't have to. Also, we NEVER tell anyone to "search" or "use the search button" like a lot of forums do. Trip, you should know this. This is what makes us different from the rest.

^^^^ I agree. Plus, if you can't or don't help there are plenty of other people that get to it. It doesn't seem like a post goes too long without being answered.

I've never understood this aversion to repeat questions on a forum.
I've built forums, hosted forums, administered forums and never got it.
Message boards thrive on conversation, even if it's the same conversation over and over again, it means people are participating which means your forum is succeeding.
I've heard it's due to bandwidth. When I built and hosted forums, the search function took more resources than new threads. Ive heard that repeat questions will bore and drive off your more knowledgeable participants, yet I haven't seen that to be the case and there are always new participants with new ideas for old issues that are willing to fill any vacancies.
People that hang out on message boards tend to be people who like to talk, if everybody did a thorough search before asking a question there would be very little to talk about because there are very few new questions that haven't been answered somewhere on the web.

I'm going to step in and repeat what Scout had to say. WF prides itself on being newbie friendly and one of the ways is by answering questions which have been asked before. Those who do not want to need not. Simply move on to another thread.

Hey Trip, when you were new, you asked a lot of questions that had been previously answered on the forum. Nobody bitched at you to use the search feature. How about you extend the same courtesy to others?

If you don't like the way newbes ask questions on this board, I'm sure you could find another one that you would be more comfortable participating on. One thing that makes WF such a great place is that we recognize the fact that newbes are new to the whole Jeep thing, and perhaps the social networking thing as well. We try to make them feel welcome here. As a personal rule, I only suggest that a new user use the search feature when there is just too much information out there to regurgitate in a single post. I only make comments about spelling and grammar to people who have been here a while and understand my sense of humor.

When you attack new users with comments about using the search feature and about their spelling and grammar, it puts them off and chases them away. You might want to consider what your purpose is here on the board. If it is to prove how superior you are and put down other people, I for one, would prefer you do it somewhere else. If you are here to welcome them to the board and genuinely help out, you might want to read some of your posts as of late and consider how they fit in with that premise.

I believe that you have a lot of good information to offer, but frankly, your arrogance is showing through and your posts are reflecting it.

I have to say, I am so pleased with the responses of everyone in this thread.
Tripp, just as Unlimited said, I'm sure you have a lot of info to offer. But I also know that you're young and I have looked at and read your old posts. Looks to me that you learned a lot of your "Jeep knowledge" here on this board. So why would you of all people complain that others should try to find the knowledge on their own when you yourself have asked many of the same rudimentary questions?

Here's a little homework for you. Through completing this task, you will learn something that will aid you in all of your post and will keep people off your butt.

OK, ready for your assignment?
Here it is:

I have to say, I do like the fact that when questions are asked, nobody gets flamed for it here. Ive been on a few Jeep forums that I do not visit anymore because I have either gotten told to search or just flamed because my Jeep wasn't to their specs. This is a great community where everyone can voice their opinions and help out other fellow Jeepers. If I was to ask a question as a newbie, (which I still am), and you told me to use the search button, I probably would not ask you for advice or take your posts seriously after that because I would figure you just dont know the answer to the question.

What I find entertaining about telling people "use the dang search" is if you have no idea what's wrong or what exactly you're looking for what key words are you supposed to use?

i agree with everyone. when i was new to the forum it took me a while to get acquainted with everything. also i know that i have posted some threads that have been posted before. even if you search you may not even find a thread that pertains if you don't use there same words as the thread title. if you see a thread that has already been posted you can either not view that thread or you can direct the "poster" to the other thread.

I have attempted to use the search button and to no avail, So yes I'll ask a question that probably has been answered a couple of times or more.

this is what makes this forum different. a newbie can ask a recurring question, and get 10 fast welcoming answers. i agree with everyone's responses.

gotcha all. Yes I have asked questions. I know. Most of us have, if not all. If i cant find anything in the search, i ask. We try to be newb friendly and there is nothing wrong with that. I guess most people look at the search as a smack in the face with a glove when its not.

Tiny, you search something, no results, u ask, there is nothing wrong with that. Your engine is knocking and you dont know what it is. There is nothing wrong with a new thread either.

...and with that being said, no one is going to tell another member here, especially a new member, to search for an answer.

We welcome people to go ahead and just ask. There's no way to use the search if you do not know the terms on which to search. The smack in the face is someone informing newbies to "use the darn search".

Ok now I have something to add......

If it bugs user "X" then they have the choice to not read it nor respond with a rude comment.

If it irritates them so bad. Then they have the choice to .

u use the search, if you dont understand something in that thread u ask and you get a nice response that is newb friendly.

Besides the one that decides to post because the newb asked a question.
