water pumps and timing belts...

I'm looking at a Cherokee...

http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst/car/387025568.html

and the guy says it'll need a water pump in the next couple of months. It's an 88 with 122k miles on it.

Anybody know about how much a new water pump will cost me? And am I right in thinking that it'll need a new timing belt along with that? I'm not sure where but I think I've heard that when you put in a new water pump you need a new timing belt too.

Timing belt or serpentine? I would change the serpentine (the one big one you can see) but I think it has a timing chain under the cover. V-6? I had an '88 commanche pioneer that had the I-6...check with AZ, he'll prolly know. Nice ride, nice price.

I want it for my son.

I finally found the parts, now I'm wondering if I can do the work. (JJ, I don't know, there's a timing chain? or something or other, I'm not sure what I'm getting into)

It says V6, but its the 4.0L I6, the dumped the V6's in 87. The 4.0L has a timing chain, not a belt. And Timing chains can last the lift of the car. Water pump - maybe $60 at auto part store, and not all that hard to replace really, the fan clutch is the only difficult thing about it, but if your going to be replacing the water pump it would be a good idea to replace the serpentine belt as well.

So Tiny - did ya go check that XJ out?

Whats your spending limit? I'd also check AutoTrader as people with "better" vehicles spend the money to get them sold. A friend found a 92 in excellent condition for $2500.

Also - when looking, make sure all the doors line up. If they arn't lining up its been wheeled a lot and the body is tweaked.

It's two hours away on the other side of LA. I'm trying to work it out with the guy to go see it, but he doesn't have time saturday when I do. I have $4000 to spend, but I'd like to not spend all of it in case we need to drop some money into it.

My boy really wants a wrangler, but I think a cherokee is just a better choice and there seems to be more of them out there to choose from. I'm still looking for a wrangler though.

There are definitely a lot more XJ's than Wranglers... and you can find them cheaper too.

Yeah, I'm really noticing that now. And I think he would like one honestly. He's not really into offroading, I think he just gets swept up in my enthusiasm. But, he wants a jeep and I think I can find a good one if I just bide my time and look.

Well someone out east was going to look at a wrangler for 1600. Maybe if he passes you can buy it and ship it out? Should be less than a grand for that.

If you look long enough you'll find something thats well worth it. Even if he's not into off roading as much as you, I think an XJ would be safer.
