Were looking for a new addition to our family

Dogs, It has been over a week an I can not get thought of having one more dog running around, protection, companion, fetch pal, family. Have not really decided on a breed just yet.
Open to any suggestions that I might come across, please feel free to chime in.

I am familiar with German Shepherd dogs, but my understanding is that they do not get along with other dogs

How often do they exercise?

Depends on the circumstances. Mine gets along well with females and neutered males. He has only had problems with other unaltered males. He has not been neutered. He has gotten along fine with my step-daughter's boxer and even little 'ankle biters'.

German Shepard's are great dogs. I had a boy that was a big boy he liked to make sure other knew but for some reason always got bet p by my old Cocker spaniel. My new GS is a drama queen, she barks and jumps around a lot. But she gets along well after she calms down. They do need lots of exercise both physically and mentally. But they really are great dogs and I will always have at least one. I never worry about my wife or house when I'm away either.
There are not bad dogs just poorly trained ones.

GSD's. I've had two, and they both got along with other dogs fine. They are super loyal, you will probably find that out. People leave them with their babies right in their faces and they won't move. They learn to be careful around children and know when and when not to play. I would have no hesitation leaving a small child in front of either of my GSD's, they were that good (don't worry parents, I don't have any kids ).

A beagle would be the best suggestion. Try to get the 4 months old puppy so you could train him better..

Go for a rescue. Just go to a local shelter, find a cute one and train it. Muts behave just as well as purebreeds, but without all those health complications. Plus, you're saving a life!

I would also agree with this. I also have a lab mutt I got as a puppy from a shelter. He was house trained two weeks after we got him. He is extremely smart and very well tempered. He let my other two dogs walk all over him. He is scared of new things and people. Not aggressive at all he just runs and hides if someone comes over.
Purebred or mutts having a dogs in my personal opinion makes life better. Throw in a Jeep and who needs anything else really?

I love Shepherds and rescue is a great thing but you can also bring home a host of unknown problems.

My favorite breed is Doberman Pinscher. They have a rep of being vicious dogs but they are not at all when properly raised and socialized. They are extremely loyal and will instinctively guard their families but are genuinely friendly when no threat is presented. They are true clowns and love silly play. Check out

www.gentledoberman.com

Lots of info and a great forum.

My baby is a 70 pound female just over a year old. Extremely intelligent and affectionate.

My vote is Golden Retriever. But I have two. They are the two best dogs I've ever owned. Litter mates. Not show-style Goldens but field Goldens. BIG difference in looks. Mine are darker, shorter haired, kinda hyper pups. They just turned a year old a couple of weeks ago.

Might not be for you, though. I also like Chesepeake Bay Retrievers. Highly intelligent dogs.

I thought that I would throw my breed-O-choice into the ring... AMERICAN BULLDOG! The way I see it, you obviously drive the best American Offroader, might as well have the best American dog! True Grit, True Devotion, and True Love are the three words most associated with the breed and I couldn't agree more. My boy Beau is one great dog, gets along well with kids and other dogs and is incredibly loyal. American Bulldog Information and Pictures this is one website that has some good info on AB's but if you look around on this site it also has every other breed you can think of. My only reservation for you about this breed is they are very stubborn and can be difficult to train if your a newer dog owner. Also, the breeder i got my dog from American Bulldog American Bulldogs Puppies Breeder has some great AB's, in case your interested.

I want one of these very badly but my g/f that I live with has two ankle biters. I'm just not sure how they would react with each other. Plus my apt complex is already pissed at me that I have two dogs, three might make it worse

Well here is your first boxer recommendation. I have had my boxer for a little over a year...they are very energetic, but loyal and protective. She loves attention, and loves her ball. I have heard that they arent the best dogs for younger kids only because they are very rough and would probably knock them on their butts, but if the dog grows up around the kids it may have better awareness lol. Shes great though and I wouldnt trade her for anything. Here's Roxy...

But I am also a fan rescues. We have one as well...shes one of a kind, kind of a dork, but a great dog. According to the shelter, she is a mix between airedale and lab. Here's Sadie...

German Shepherd!!! Definitely! I grew up with them. I'll never have any other kind. They r smart. Loyal. Loving. Great dogs! Like most dogs they need a lot of exercise especially while a puppy. As far as getting along with other dogs/animals.. If u introduce them to it when thy are young thy will be fine. Just socialize em... Take em to dog parks n what not. I even had a German shepherd that was ok wit cats... Took a bit... But after taking her on trips to see my grandparents she got use to it n would even play around wit him. Hope u don't mind shedding tho... They shed a bit. But they r worth it! And best of all... Best guard dog ever. Nobody would dare approach a person or break into a house that had a German shepherd...

True story:
I've come home to find a shoe on my balcony from someone who apparently tried to break in... Good girl

A little off topic but speaking of Dobes, this an awesome of a Dobe who was wounded in the WWII battle for Guam and given a ride on a historic jeep. I really like this photo.

Here's another from the same collection

Totally agree with Boxer. Great dog, very loyal and loving. We got ours at 7wks and he has had time to grow up with us. I've got 2 young boys, and he knows how to respond to each of us and how to play. I've had lots of dogs over the years and he ranks with the best of them.

The best dogs I've ever been around were a male Brittany Spaniel named Shelby and a female Pug named Maggie. Both lived to the ripe old age of 15-16 and were well loved members of our family. We just got a Mini Schnauzer puppy last weekend. Her name is Amelia. She shares the house with Ted, our 6 year old Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix. He's a great dog.

I had a female Brittany that was awesome. My only problem with her was she could jump my fence like a deer and go visit the neighbors.

Oh... My bad. It read exactly like an ad in the underground papers, asking for prospective partners for a poly family.
