what do you guys think??

I've been looking for a used jeep and yesterday I found one

the jeep I found

but I had a few questions about it so I sent this email...

I'm interested in more information about your Jeep. Is this jeep an auto and is it a 4 banger or a I6? What brand lift and does it have a spare?

This is what I got back.....

Sorry for this late reply but I have been overwhelmed by the number of emails I got from interested buyers after listing the car on Yahoo Autos and Craigslist, hundreds really! I must avoid the chit-chat as I don't have time for it so I hope I will cover here all the aspects of this purchase and answer to all the questions you might have. The car is in good running condition and comes with a clear title. There is no lien on it, there will be no monthly payments, no take over payments, just final price. No damages or scratches of course. The total price I'm asking for it is $2900 as listed on the website and on top of that I need the money fast because I'm going to Iraq soon so whoever will respond faster and accept the price and the terms will be the lucky owner of this beast.

I would like to use a third party service to handle this transaction for our both safety and comfort. Yahoo Autos offers a third party service for their premium members only, of course for a small fee. As a Yahoo Autos premium seller I can apply for this service and I'm willing to pay for their fee if you agree using their service. This is how it works. I will initiate the transaction using the terms below and your details for shipping. Yahoo Autos will contact you with further instructions. You will send the payment to Yahoo Autos. They will hold in trust the funds and advise me to ship to your address. The car will be shipped from Vegas at no extra cost for you. You will get the car and test drive it, inspect it etc for 3 days. After that you will have to confirm with Yahoo Autos that you agree to purchase it and I will get paid at that time. If you don't like it you will get your money back in full and I will get my car back and try to find another buyer. This will be at no cost for you so it's your decision. If you agree than please send me:

- your full name (first and last name)
- your shipping address (street, city, state, zip code)
- your contact phone number (home or cell)
- additionally you will have to sign up with Yahoo Autos and send me your Yahoo ID (go to Yahoo! click Autos on the left side and sign up)

I will use these details to initiate the third party transaction with Yahoo Autos. Yahoo will contact you right after that with further instructions on how to complete the transaction on your end. Before you send me that info you'll first have to review and accept the terms of this third party transaction:

- shipping and paperwork will be handled by DAS Auto Shippers
- after you receive the car you will have 3 business days for inspection
- I will pay for the shipping fees
- I will pay for the Yahoo Autos fees
- total price you have to pay is $2900

If you accept the terms and have the money ready, not waiting for a loan or financing, please send me your details so I can start the Yahoo transaction.

Best regards, James.

hmmmmmmm.... SCAM??!?!

(I already wrote back passing on it, though I was nice I let him know I thought it was a scam.)

I'm really wondering if I should flag it over on craigslist. I figured it was a scam right away since I live right down the road (from where he's got it listed) and he didn't answer anything I asked. Anyone who rushes you is trying to pull something over on you.

I would flag it. someone less savy might be taken in by it and suffer.
Drive by the place that shows the listing to see if a jeep is there.

Yeah, if it's located in Palm Springs, why are they shipping it from Vegas ?

Cruised around the yahoo auto site and didn't see anything about brokering deals. Sounds like you made the right call.

Its a shame people like this need make it sound real by saying they are going to Iraq. The soldiers over there are protecting our freedoms at the cost of their lives. I am not a soldier but I have many friends who have served or are over there now and that kind of trickery upsets me.

Anyway, I find it funny he is trying to sell the $2900 jeep when there is an FJ Cruiser, Ford Explorer and one other vehicle that I can't make out. If it seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Good luck with search Tiny.

It is a scam - you should have it flagged on craigslist (just checked...someone already did). First - NEVER deal with someone that says that they're out of the country or about to leave the country. Second - if the price seems too good to be true - it is. For someone that has so little time, he sure did write a lengthy e-mail. These scammers usually have broken english...his is surprisingly good.

I did end up flagging it and I'm going to forward the links and email to craigslist when I get home later.

You'll run into scam artists whether you're buying or selling. I found that out real quick when I was selling my motorcycle last summer. They all use similar e-mails so you could tell when it was fake...they never want to deal with you in person. I was fed up with all the jerks trying to scam me and just started telling them to go #%@* themselves. I get angry just thinking about it.

Exact reason why I only like to sell things to people face to face whenever possible.

Hmm, I love Ebay but it is true, there are lots of people out there looking to scam you. Face to face is always best if you can swing it. Sorry they tried to scam you TT.

Just so y'all know, when I got home this morning I wrote to the craigslist abuse department. I sent them the link to the listing, the email I sent the seller and the email I got back from him that's at the top of this thread.

The ad's been removed.

Yeah that is a popular scam. However I would almost bet that this particular scam originated from the U.S. His english and grammar is too good. Also he lists a reputable company for the shipping. Whenever I'm not sure about something like that, I always google a phrase that sticks out from the listing. You'll usually get a bunch of results like Auto Broker Scam or something. If it's legit, you won't get many results that make sense.
