there are two possible explanations:

1) the old greek word "catadupe" means "waterfall"

2) people in the 17. century said that after hurricanes and tornados because animals "rained" in real.

I heard the raining cats and dogs was because when they used to have thatch/hay roofs, when it got wet the cats would slip thorugh or something and fall to the ground

I’ll be a monkey’s uncle was originally a sarcastic remark made by non-believers of Darwinism.

I had heard that in the old days, people would put their animals on the roof of their homes at night. If it rained hard, the animals couldn't stay on the roof, they would slide off.

Hence........... raining cats and dogs Believe it or not

That one supposedly had its origin in Arkansas...

suck-egg mule, an irritating, worthless liability. Literally, a mule that eats your eggs. I've heard this one all my life, but only as the exclamation, "Well I'll be a suck-egg mule!" It's one of those substitution expletives someone uses when he starts to say "son of a bitch" and in the middle of the first syllable realizes he's in mixed company

How about this one? "Dead Ringer"
