With the cloud cover so thick, it was the loudest launch I've ever witnessed. I'm about 5 miles from that launch tower and it set off all the car alarms around me.

I know what you mean. I work on the Air Force side of the river. Spent a couple of years on the NASA side and I couldn't stand their procedures.

I quit reading about halfway through his fabulous posts. My super hot Brazilian/Mexican/Portuguese/Russian girlfriend/wife distracted me.

I got to see the launch of shuttle atlantis in november 2009 in person, by far the coolest thing i've bore witness to in my entire life.. they had an amature ham radio truck near where i watched from, and they had the live feed of all the systems checks.. sent chills up my spine hearing that, then seeing it lift off.. after seeing it, watching it on TV will never do it justice, the flames are so intensely bright, and the noise is amazing..

I have been lucky enough to see 5 launches live. I live in Indiana and we vacation in Florida. I have never planned it that way just with about 15 trip to Florida 5 of them have had a shuttle launch going on. It was just coincidence, but worth seeing. The best one I saw was in the late 80's sometime. My dad and I were out on a fishing boat about halfway between the space center and Daytona. It was awesome. 2 or three years ago i saw my last launch. We were in Orlando and drove over for it.

Hey, that looks familiar:

-As you can probably tell, I'm a little further south (pic taken near MLB).

I grew up watching the Shuttle... from seeing Columbia fly over my house on the back of a 747 to watching Challenger break apart from the school playground & later seeing Columbia fall to pieces on TV (while the wife and I were celebrating our first wedding anniversary, no less), it's hard for me to imagine a world without regular Shuttle launches.

P.S. you haven't seen a launch unless you've been present for a night-time one
