What stupid thing did you do?

Laughing at yourself is healthy so I thought I'd share this. Haven't had a Jeep for some years but I now have a 97 TJ. Almost look forward to driving to work every day. One of the first things was some rigging to take the top off easily for one person. So rolling to work with the top off is a real pleasure. Some days I leave early and take the long way around.

So for all you folks just taking the top off for the first time, a word of advice.

Do not use the windshield washers, especially if you wear glasses !!!

What about buying a cover at a flea market and discovering, AFTER rain, that it was only a DUST cover....

Oh, forgot this one.... Tried to curl down the corner of the plastic rear window to slide in a flagpole in subzero weather. I remember thinking how stiff it felt.... And that I should probably stop. Of course it had cracked just before my brain reached the word 'stop' in that last thought.

I take the top off in May and put it on in October. Well, went to the grand nephew's 7th grade football game and on the way home stopped for 2 chili dogs with mustered and onions. They put cheese on them so I shook it off into the little Styrofoam carton and ate the dog.About half way home I couldn't wait so I took the second one out and the wind caught the almost empty bag which caused the Styrofoam to blow out and open. It flew all around the inside of the Jeep and I tried to catch it so it wouldn't blow out. Finally trapped it, however I had cheese and onions all over the place. I even had cheese stuck to the inside of the windshield. Good thing the grand nephews weren't with me. Now I remember why they aren't allowed to eat in any of my vehicles

Not a Jeep story but one night a couple of Januarys ago I jacked up my truck and put on the studded tires expecting snow over night. Next morning I put it in gear and let out the clutch and thought OH CARP my clutch is gone, then I listened and heard a strange noise, the sound of studs just barley scraping the concrete floor because I didn’t let the jack down last night.
My wife had to leave the garage open a couple minutes and let the brain fart clear that morning.

First mod I attempted was changing my breaks. Got the tire off, reached around, found the bolt and thought to myself as a reminder, "lefty-loosey, righty-tighty", and began to crank counter clockwise. Had a bit of trouble loosening the thread, so I really leaned on it. Then, TINK! The bolt-head broke right the hell off! Then I did the same thing to the second bolt! Eventually I realised that whan addressing a bolt from the end OPPOSITE the head, counter-clockwise will tighten it...
Put down the steroids and pick up a book, right?! JUST KIDDING!

Not about a Jeep but kind of related....

My second car, when I was a teen, was a '71 Chrysler New Yorker. It had no ground clearance and weighed in at 4950 pounds dry... I went on a little back road along the river here in SD and thought it was more off road worthy than it really was... My first tow bill... This is much steeper than the pic makes it look. I made it all the way down to the little pond and then realized I could not drive it back out.

Great stories. I'm a recent TJ owner. First purchase was a bikini top. Drove to work the other day and arrived right before the downpour. It rained hard and steady for a while but stopped probably around 10:00AM. I figured I would still have swamp butt from the wet seats by 5:00. I got to the Jeep and the seats were dry. I was quite happy! Fired her up, put her in first and pulled away......yeah.....guess who forgot about all the water that pooled on the bikini top? Yeah..this drenched guy! It was hysterical...

Forgot a small bag of sockets on the driver's side fender. Made it out of the neighborhood and 100yds down the main road before they finally fell off and went everywhere. D'oh. Craftsman doesn't replace *lost* tools...

When I was much younger I had a car and it needed a Ujoint. So I drove it on some ramps and put it in park.
Started to remove the drive shaft and thought to my self, this thing is really stuck.
So I took a screw driver and popped the joint out.
Luckily my hip stoped the car before it rolled in the street.
Told my dad I don't know what happened,
I had it in park!!!!

Forgot to plug in the rear washer hose on the hard top and went through a whole bottle of washer fluid (soaked the interior) before I realized why it wasn't working.

When my second son was born, I had been handing out cigars and smoking them. Used a bench ad auto knife a friend gave me and I carry on duty. Wife called while I was at the house finishing the kid's room, they were releasing her. I jumped in the car and shifted back in my seat.....yeah, where an opened bench made knife was. One inch in my left butt check, about one inch wide. I jusmped up and felt the blood running down my leg. I made the mistake of telling my Sgt....now that's all I ever hear about, along with the story of locking myself out of my patrol car during a traffic stop.

Had to replace the battery in my wifes charger today. I was about half way home from auto zone when someone at a red light informed me that my socket set was still sitting on the front bumper of my jk. For once I'm glad I still have the big plastic stock bumpers.

I forgot to put mine when I posted earlier. Well I was taking the t case skid off an got a stubborn bolt out and started cranking on it and finally got it moving so I started to wrench that sucker fast and while I was doing so I desided to take a peak at how far I was getting then BAM it hit me!!! The socket wrench slipped off the bolt and I smacked myself in the forehead split my right eyelid right open started gushing everywhere was no fun explaining that one to everyone

Spent like 6 hours drilling my rear crossmember and snaking like 45 socket extensions and flex joints over/around my gas tank to install a heavy duty rear bumper/tire carrier on the rear of my Jeep. It attached via 8 studs. Solid as all hell, but took FOREVER to get everything lined up and torqued down to 80 ft/lbs.

Then i see that the spindle for the tire carrier is sitting about an inch and a half under my tailgate hinge, and i have to slide a 4" sleeve/bearing pair over it from the top.

FFFFFFUUUUUUUU

Try laying them on the front bumper for a sec to check underneath, then hop in the Jeep, back up to turn it around and then..you hear glass shatter.

Yep..I drove over my sunglasses

Packing the Jeep up after a day at the beach...my shorts are wet, so I put my iphone on the tail light while I pack the trunk up. 3 miles of off-road beach later, I stop for ice cream, and check my messages. No phone. Not on my tail light. Turn around and try to go back...the road is now closed because of an extreme tide. I talk the guard into letting me out anyway...beach where I parked is now under a foot of water...I scan the 3 miles of road, hoping the phone fell off somewhere...never found.

I broke the nipple off the emission leak
Detection pump. Took me over a hour to figure out what it was and that a replacement costs $120.

At about 7PM on my home from the gym, I decided to hit one of the trails behind Fort Benning. Got stuck FIFTEEN FEET off of a main road! The mud was litterally coming in through my doors. Everyone I called was either out of town, busy, or just not answering. I made about 20min worth of phone calls before my phone died. Had to keep it running bacause the exaust was submerged, but I had like an eighth of a tank of gas... see where this is going?

Left my running Jeep in the mud hole and ran about 2 miles to the nearest intersection and started trying to flag down cars. About 30min later - and with 40min of sunlight left - I got a guy in a pickup to stop and help, though he didnt have much gear. We broke two of his tow-straps before we relized that his truck was stuck too! AND blocking MY escape route. So we walked back to his camper at the nearby (about three miles) camper park. It was about 930PM when we got there and this guy (and his awesome family) was kind enough to allow my mud-covered, gym-smelling ass drink one of his beers while I tried to find a tow company that was still open via his internet phone.

Finally, his wife started asking about the state of the vehicle and asked what kind of insurance I have. I told her USAA and she looked at me like I was crazy... She followed that with, "Doesnt USAA offer free road-side assistance?"

I felt like the biggest asshole on the planet... I called USAA and they said they'd have a truck out to me in a half hour. The guy was then cool enough to give me a ride back out to my Jeep... where we found two patrol cars worth of Military Police initiating a search of the area for the missing occupant(s). We were still giving them our statements when the tow truck and more police cruisers) got there.

Anyway, we got unstuck, I thanked the guy tremendously (he has a running favor with me he can collect at any time) and headed home. Picked up a 6pack on the way home but walked in the door with a three-pack, which made my wife's ambush (remember, my phone died) a little easier.

True Story.
