I don't leave anything of value inside my TJ. However, I've read time and time again how peoples' soft tops were slashed despite leaving their doors unlocked.

My insurance company covers any damage to my soft top due to break-ins, so I decided to just start leaving my doors locked.

I understand the rationale behind leaving doors unlocked (and I used to do it myself), but there's just too many knuckleheads out there. I don't want to give them another opportunity to do something stupid to my Jeep by leaving the doors unlocked.

I try to park as close as I can to the house.
Neighbors don't like it though.

Yeah i don't leave my doors unlocked either. Criminals are just dumb, or maybe they do it on purpose, but the top always seems to get slashed anyway. even when you could just open the door, or poke your finger in between the zippers, they still slash the tops.

x2 on the cameras. Didn't even have the jeep when I got my camera's installed, but no one has ever touched it. I've been lazy and forgot to take the faceplate off the radio, while the top was down all night.

Mine are up high on the second floor of the house. Can't get to them to steal them without getting your face on film. It's all hooked up to a DVR in another locked room in the house. You can remote into it too and watch them on your cell or laptop while you are away.

Also i suggest posting clearly visible signs stating there is video surveillance on your property. If they know they are going to be on camera, they tend to just stay away from the property altogether unless they are just dumb. And the dumb ones make it way too easy for you to catch them anyway.

Don't forget lack of respect to other people or their belongings.

This happened to me a LONG time ago, still had a U-mount cassette player in my truck!(for those who don't know / remember the U-mount, it had a really tiny hole in the middle of the dash where it mounted and two holes on either side for the knobs to go through, and it had an analog dial on it!) They ended up stealing my cassette player and a cd player that I had laying in the seat. At the time I thought it funny that they would go to great lengths to steal a Craico radio that only worked when you beat the dash, but later I think it really hit home that it wasn't the stereo, but the principle behind it.

It's just too bad it's illegal to shoot a-holes like that. World may have less crime!

It's a shame that you are right though. In general people are assholes.

Stupid rights activists have made it illegal to paddle our kids. Now they grow up to be criminals because they don't know right from wrong. And they don't have respect for others because of it.

You can't even fire a shotgun in the air to scare em off. If you do, you go to jail just for protecting your hard earned property.

Society is breaking down around us folks. Might as well sit back and enjoy the ride.

For the record, I think it's a good idea to get theft-deterrent stuff for my Jeep. Some people subscribe to the belief that "if a thief wants it, they're going to get it no matter what."

However, theft deterrent options will at least slow down a would-be thief. I'd imagine most thieves don't even bother if they see a strong-looking lock box.

Not according to our VP. Just fire that shotgun right through the door. You don't even need to know who is on the other side.

Last guys to try mine were on ATVs, which subsequently took a couple .22 rounds through the block.
They didn't get too far, and living this far out, pointless calling the cops.
Needless to say, no one has attempted it since....
I might also add that I caught his little bro tearing up my lawn on his ATV a while after this - 40ft of 80lb braid and 20 size 2/0 barbed hooks strung across his quite stupidly predictable area of attack, and voila! No more local scumbags!!!

I believe my reputation precedes me in these parts

Kudo's to ya, that seems to be an issue for folks like us who live in remote areas where officers tend to make that monthly pass by to keep the peace lol As they say: you need something done, do it yourself!

I wish you could get away with doing that in VA. My luck I would get thrown in jail for shooting the gun in town. There would be less crime in this country if people were allowed to shoot in defense of their property. At least people would think twice about going on someone's property uninvited.

I saw this sign at a gun show years ago, "tresspassers will be shot, survivors will be shot again". Pretty much sums up how things should be in my opinion. But alas, too much beurocracy and red tape these days.

I had just gotten out of the army moved into apartment complex and there had been rash of car break-ins. My neighbor warned me that it was going on for two weeks! Sure enough that night My window got smashed my car was broken into!
So I put my tree stand up in a tree got in my ghille with my bow an blunt tipped arrows. Around 2 AM this guy comes to the parking lot looking at vehicles... Smashes a window then hits another car... He got about 30 yards away and I hit him with a blunt tipped arrow to the left femur!! He dropped like a rock , screaming his head off! He didn't have a clue what happened to him. I Climbed down detained him, neighbor called the police... A detective told me later that they had found him responsible for over 200 breakins! He also asked how I had taken him down... When I asked why? He said that The guy's entire left leg was black and blue for five weeks and the guy could hardly walk for first three weeks he was in custody! The detective said it was off the record so I told him the truth... He just shook his head with this smirk on his face. He couldn't believe I spent six hours in a tree. i told him 10 years as a sniper taught me a lot of patients! The guy got 12 years in prison!!

Question.... If someone breaks a door window to break into the jeep, will insurance cover replacing it?

I think you need full coverage. During the Waldo Canyon fire last year here in Colorado... I had a bear yes A BEAR! Break my driver side window and they would not cover it because I did not have full coverage!

My insurance covered my window in a previous car, but I still had to pay the deductible.

Deductible is the key word I love with insurance companies... I tried to increase my deductible to see if it would help lower my insurance... Nope. Age of a vehicle seems to be a factor for me. I should really go over my policy again. All I know is after 20 years of insurance payments, mine should drop again in August as I've been a licensed driver with no infractions of serious nature. Yahoo lol meh.

What about just removing the faceplate of the radio?

Thugs look inside to steal whatever they can find. But they wouldn't have any idea WHAT kind of radio you had, plus, even if somehow they knew, they would need to have the proper faceplate for it to work.

Or, are they so stupid, that they'd take the time to rip out a radio, just to discover later that they didn't really want it?

Are they really that stupid?

I am reconsidering the iVault.
I think if a thief sees a metal structure protecting your stereo, he/she will probably think it is a high dollar stereo, worth the trouble of trying to get at it.

You might want to consider the difference in price. My head unit was only about $120 and has a detachable faceplate. Adding an iVault for another $60 might just be overkill. Most modern stereos have a detachable faceplate anyway.

That being said, though, if you still want to lock up your faceplate, you may want to consider an under-seat storage solution like this one. It's a little more than an iVault, but it's got more than enough room to keep the faceplate and a number of other items.

It also has the bonus of being under a seat, which means out of view. I had my former car broken into because I forgot to take an empty backpack out of my back seat. It was empty, but the jackass who broke out my window decided it might have something in it worth the trouble of smashing out my window.

Another option, a bit more expensive though. Keep the crappy looking stock radio in the dash as a decoy.

Get one of those security center consoles, and mount the real radio in there.

If they are desperate enough to want the factory one they are still going to break in. But at least they will have no clue your nice radio is even in the jeep. They will just take the crap one and run not bothering to look for another radio.

Plus you can keep your interior looking somewhat factory this way.

I woke up this morning to find my CB antenna gone. They tore it off the bracket, ruined my coax cable, all of which I had just bought and installed. Room mate found my antenna lying in the street about a block away. Probably the same low life punks that stole a radiator, car battery, sun glasses and inhaler out of my Jeep and my room mates bike.

Time to set up a CC Camera on the roof and find these losers. I will destroy their face.

Sorry, had to vent. This sh*t always ruins a day.

Sorry to hear your bad luck man. If your into the market for cost effective cam, I would suggest Tenvis or foscam on ebay. The idea of planting it almost anywhere (indoor is recommended since its not weather proof) next to a window watching, set it up for night and motion record automatedly might be your ticket!

I'm looking into solar powered motion sensor lights (cheap if possible) to be installed right in front of my jeep which faces my shed. I figure I'd share this info for anyone who is thinking on the same lines:

16 LED Solar Power Motion Induction Sensor Lamp Outdoor Garden Path Wall Light | eBay

I have been there too, that is when I started buying stuff from Tuffy. If they manage to get into my console, glove box, etc. I feel that they earned whatever they got lol.
