who's bright idea was this?

One has to wonder at the intelligence of our government when it comes to "the little things".

Statue of Liberty flyby startles New Yorkers

Quote:
NEW YORK (Reuters) – An Air Force fighter jet and one of President Barack Obama's official planes on Monday flew low over the Statue of Liberty in an approved photo opportunity that startled some New Yorkers who have memories of the September 11 attacks.

New York City officials notified some businesses but not all city agencies or the general public. People in New York remain sensitive to such incidents in lower Manhattan, site of the 2001 attacks involving hijacked airliners that destroyed the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center.

Many people left their buildings, and stock prices extended losses at the time.
Lovely.

Wow. Someone didn't think that one through. Maybe the big O wanted a pic for his desktop. Who cares what the people think anyways. Right???

Hah. It was for a military photo op.
As a New Yorker who was in lower Manhattan (I worked in financial services) at the time of the September 11th attacks, I have to say, insensitivity like this bothers me. While I understand the need for "secrecy," since it did involve one of the planes that functions as Air Force One at times, I also am upset by the lack of sensitivity shown by this display. People who work in lower Manhattan were traumatized by an act involving airplanes crashing into buildings, and bringing one to low altitude near a MAJOR national monument just for a pretty picture is simply wrong.
I have nothing but disgust to display for the morons who thought this up- Mark W.

I wouldn't have considered it a major concern, we have airliners and smaller aircraft flying over all the other cities in the country all the time.
The chances of being killed in a terrorist attack are astronomically small, people need to get over it or the terrorists win.

ETA: before someone misinterprets my meaning. I mean get over the fear, not get over 9-11

^ Thanks for the edit, skeeter- I will NEVER get over September 11th and what I saw, felt, and experienced that day. One day, I'll be able to go back to Ground Zero and pay my respects- I still can't bring myself to do it. One of my neighbors lost 90% of his company, and was lucky enough to be out sick that day. Seeing his face that night is something I could never forget.
The fear isn't the issue here- it's the blatant disregard of common sense and decency shown by the folks who rigged this stunt up. I mean, what would you do if you saw a 747 with a military jet close behind fly near the Space Needle at low altitude?
Anywho, bad call on their part- Mark W.

No one has to "get over" anything. The Vietnam vets have been hearing that noise for too long. It would have taken nothing to let the area know there would be a fly by. Bad call.

Hmmm...Great question...

I'll just let YOU decide (since you aren't getting a duck otherwise).

Right. The need for secrecy based on the specific aircraft is valid. All they had to do was say "There will be a large commercial airliner flying overhead, no need to be alarmed." They don't need to mention that it is one of the presidential planes.

I can very easily imagine what was going through some of the peoples minds. I will never look at large aircraft flying through the sky at lower altitudes(like at airports or airbases) the same way ever again. Every time I see one I see a building right in front of it, and I only watched the events on TV from the comfort of my home in Oregon. I'm also in the Air Force now so I see it frequently.

Agreed, and I doubt Mr. O was in the plane for the photo. Its just a wall hanger for his study.

There are a few people who would literally have a heart attack if they saw that.
