Why do people tailgate?

I am talking about on the road, not at a football game.

I drive the speed limit or a little over. I have had several incidents in the past year where people literally are about to bump draft me like in nascar. It happened again today.

For some idiotic reason people feel they must pass the car in front of them even if it means having to stop at the traffic light just a few feet ahead.

People are inconsiderate and think that the world revolves around them. They have no courtesy or respect or their fellow drivers or traffic laws. I guess they think it will make you speed up. Funny, it usually has the opposite effect on me. Downshifting usually takes care of that problem. People that speed up when you go to pass them tick me off too. If everyone would follow 3 simple rules, driving would be so much more pleasurable...Lead, follow, or GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY!

I will not hesitate to tailgate some moron going 20mph under the speed limit in the left lane that refuses to move over.

People are only inconsiderate and d-bags and blah blah blah blah if they're doing it in the right lane. If they're doing it in the left lane, what some of us call the fast/passing lane, it means GET THE HELL OUT OF THE WAY. I live in tourist alley Florida. Can't stand when people piddle part around on the highway.

I don't like tailgaters (drivers, not the stadium type) and if they're persistent I'll slowly start to slow down.

I try not to tailgate anyone.

Tailgating is fun. Especially when you bring a grill, cooler, and friends. That's the only tailgating I do

Some chick in a scion tc was tailgating me the other day. I was almost tempted to check her since my jeep would have been fine and her car....not so much.

When it comes to off-highway driving, I don't have any idea why people tailgate and race up to the next red light. But on the highway, the left lane is for passing, so if that isn't what you are going to do, then move over. I tend to agree with the "lead, follow, or get out of the way," but in a simpler adage: just decide what speed you are going to go. It drives me freakin crazy when I'm in the left lane coming up on someone and they speed up as I get closer and then keep me in their blind spot.

I only tailgate when someone's driving well below the speed limit and seem to be getting slower, I slow down to give them space and they get slower. It's almost if they want to be tailgated.
In Alberta we can call 911 if we suspect someone is impaired behind the wheel. I haven't done it yet because you have to pull over to make the call, but they have tempted me

Edit: I have also brake checked drivers who tailgated me. Scared one coworker pretty badly but she was well known for speeding and tailgating. It was the perfect opportunity to chew her out for the behavior when she got in to work and tried to confront me about it. She never did it to me again and I didn't hear about her doing it to other coworkers so perhaps my lesson sank in.

THIS!!!

I hate that too. The reason I'm passing is because I'm going 63 and youre going 60. I've been going 63 for the past 10 minutes, its not going to hurt your pride to let me go by.

If you are in the left lane and doing the speed limit, and refusing to move over, you are asking to be tailgated. You are supposed to yield to faster traffic.

In many states, if you are in the left lane and refuse to yield to faster traffic, you can be ticketed. Even if the faster traffic is speeding.

I will say, in practice, I have never seen a left lane hog pulled over and ticketed properly.

I wish they would in my area. The problem has gotten so bad in my area that it's almost easier to drive in the right hand lane.

Something must be wrong with my Jeeps...or Indiana driver's aren't that bad. The Jeeps sit high enough that most people/ cars I don't even notice if they are tailgating...and the bigger 4wd trucks or SUVs....yeah they are already passing me I am never in that big of a hurry

I pass people all the time on solid yellow lines if they are driving very slow, I wait for the 100yds clear line of site etc rule first then make my pass. If someone is driving the speed limit then I will stay a good 20 yds back or more. Being up someones rear end isn't gona make them go faster. Some people seem to think so. If people tail gate me I will slow down and drive down the middle of the road til they back off. I am a jerk to people who are inconsiderate. Tough.

On the highway, I stick to the right hand lane. Driving over 55 kills mileage, so I keep it right around 65 unless I am in a hurry, otherwise I am watching the gas gauge drop... Central PA drivers are fairly reasonable but you have some nuts where ever you go. City drivers IMO have less patience than country folk.

I was running 5 over the limit (55).. my normal. I was PASSING traffic. I had a newer Corolla with a younger looking female trying to push me down the line. Mind you I had another vehicle in front of me so I wasn't the hold up. She was waving her hands, yelling, swerving to look around me. I was almost getting nervous when I was loosing site of the front of her car in my mirror. Finally get past the string of traffic, and get into the other lane. She comes flying around me.. raising her hand at me. coincidentally I was at my exit so I am ready to get over. Appears she wanted that exit too and no sooner did she get in front of me (in the passing lane, me heading down the exit) she swerved over from the passing lane 3 lanes total and stomped her brakes, cutting through the emergency triangle area in front of an exit, and into my lane (on the exit). I managed to get the TJ stopped.. but I was beside her in the emergency patch and grass by the time I got stopped. At this point it's my turn to wave my hands and do some yelling. I'll spare you the context, short story is she apologized a few times and rolled her window up.

We both went the same way on the exit.. and where was she in such a hurry to get to? The line at Starbucks.

SMH.

I have no idea why people tailgate. Probably because their life is far more important than mine. I've brake checked people in the past, but after an incident over the winter I won't do it anymore. I brake checked a guy in a Dakota who was following so close I couldn't see his headlights. Caught him off guard and he slammed on his brakes, got pissed, passed me and tried to brake check me. In the process though he hit a patch of ice and almost rear ended a young lady in a car. Yesterday I had a guy in a Grand Am driving on my bumper, went to pass me in the turn only lane when the guy in front of me moved into the turn lane to *gasp* turn. Almost got side swiped in that one. Actually, I've almost bit the big one a few times due to people being in some God awful hurry to do whatever is so important one will risk the life of others. Life is really, really too short to die because you're in a hurry. And dammit, I'm gonna haunt your ass if you kill me over stupidity.

When my tops off I like to flip pennies or rocks up in the air and watch them smack off of the tailgaters windshield, they back off real quick

I like the washer hose idea.

The tailgaters I encounter are when there is no passing lane- 2 lane roads. I don't even drive slowly.

I think it all boils down to the fact that everyone secretly thinks they are the best driver and everyone else is inconsiderate and sucks at driving. Everyone always thinks that the other person is the jerk but everyone that has ever driven has been on both sides of the argument at one time or another.

I think its relatively simple, there is no reason to hang out in the passing lane if you are not passing. If someone is coming up to overtake you regardless of either persons speed just move over and let them by.

1. If you are tailgating your wrong.
2. If you do not move over you are wrong.
3. If you brake check you are wrong.
4. If there is an accident or confrontation due to any of the above BOTH parties asked for it.

Edit: If you are tailgating on a 2 lane when the car in front is doing the speed limit or close you are a douche.
