Why I am proud of the community we have developed

This evening has been an enlightening one. This may come off as half-rant but I dont want it to. I just want to convey to everyone the realization that I had.

So I was spending my normal time that I spend every single day on the forum admin pages, staying current on trends and watching and looking for tips on what we can here at WF to better enhance our user experience. Part of this is visiting our competitors on a regular basis to see what they are doing right and wrong. More times than not we can look at our main competition, and honestly try to do the opposite.

Before I go further, let me lay this out there also for those that are unaware. Running a forum of any size costs money, This we understand and hope that our users understand. Hence, the reason why we keep ads on the site, in a spot where we find they are mostly unobtrusive but still convert well enough to help keep the costs of the forum under control. We also have our supporting memberships, for the most part 100% of WF revenue goes back into the site, in either support costs or in user giveaways, Our users give to us why not give back? If in the future the site were to generate any kind of extra revenue then so be it, but it is not something we actively persue. Ok back to my story.

So I am browing JF, I like JF, some of the people there are nice and have been helpful in the past, We have gained some very nice people from there also that did not care for the atmosphere. I feel like JF is a great resource and has a long life in it. However. How much of a money grubbing whore do you have to be to own it? I am amazed at the advertising network terms violations they get away with, and would not be suprised if in the long run they end up banned from most ad networks. For example Google adsense has a restriction on 3 ad units per page. Take a look at any thread on JF as a not registered user. You will be looking at the better part of 7 google ad units, on top of intellitext, that the fun little links in your posts over there. And then you have supporting memberships, oh and private advertisers. So you may be asking yourself, Don what is your beef? are you jealous of the mad $$$$$$$ they are pulling down or what?

No that is not the case, I wish everyone well, but I have been involved in the web a good amount of time, and I have made dumb mistakes before, only looking out after the money that I could make off of a site, or how quick I could pump traffic and flip a site ( pump and dump for those that are familiar) I found something new when we founded this website, I found that the sense of community that could be built upon was outstanding, that people would meet up on the weekends and help each other, that when members got sick they got flowers from friends they had never met and that made them feel beter.

The fact that JF is being ruined at the expense of padding someones wallet is what upsets me the most. all in all I wanted to say thank you all for the help in developing this place, and for helping make it what it is. Without our members we would be nothing, and other webmasters do not recognize this. In time it will effect them, but for now all we can do is do better than them at actually caring about our userbase and not the dollars in the pockets of our userbase.

People over Money.

something to live by.

Don

I've lurked a great deal over a JF, it was actually the first Jeep forum I signed onto. I'm not sure why the atmosphere over there is so different, but it is.

You've created a relaxed place here, Don, through your rules and mods. I remember reading some of the dismay caused by adding supporting membership and after seeing the way no-supporting members at JF are treated, I understand why there was some concern. It's been nice to see that sort of thing didn't happen over here and I have every faith in our moderators that it won't. Y'all are even handed and level headed. You should be proud. It's like a second home to some of us.

I've been a member on a very large number of forums for quite a few years, although in the last year I have changed my username over to the same as here. I spend more time here than all the other places combined.

I don't have much of a comment on JF other than I am less active there than just about anywhere. I find it to be less educational than JU with twice the attitude.

You have done a good job on WF Don. The sense of community here is very nice and even rather surprising considering the geopgraphical diversity. It is usually only present in the smaller local boards. Thank you for providing us a place to hang out.

I have been a moderator for several years over at a popular gaming site, therefor I know how difficult it can be to keep a forum "friendly" and keep the members on it as level as possible. It is truly rare when you find a forum where most of the people are friendly and welcoming. Much of that stems from the owner and or mods of the site too. You set a certain standard and so people who don't live up to that soon leave. As the forum grows and people change over the years, it can be a hard task to keep the atmosphere the same way but if all the members are dedicated to keeping it friendly, it will be. Best of luck WF!

OdhinnsChick, I agree. The owner and mods set the tone for the members to follow.
If the mods and "core members" (the ones that live on the board and have a billion posts) start to get into the argumentative mindset of so many forum users, it can be trouble. New forum members are kinda like children, they look to the elders to see what is and isn't acceptable in the online community.

I'm a member over at TTORA and its wild how much that place is changing. It used to be alot like this forum...everyone was friendly overall, and there was a wealth of knowledge to be shared.
Now, the TTORA National Board feels like Pirate4x4...people are scared to ask a legitimate question because the core members and mods are all carrying torches and pitchforks.
If there weren't seperate state forums within TTORA, I wouldn't be a member there at all.

I'm gonna have to agree with all the comments so far, this site is awesome. Before the TJ I owned a Chevy Cobalt and was a part of the CobaltSS.Net forum. I never posted on that forum because if you say anything even the slightest bit incorrectly you were flamed out of the forum. It was quite ridiculous. I joined this site really only because it was the second forum to come up in a google search, but I am glad I did! Just from reading a few of the posts and responses I can tell the attitude of WF is friendship and helpfulness. Thanks all, I look forward to be around for a long time with you guys

Well I'm glad that you all feel that way about the board. Means that we are actually doing something right. The way that Donnie, Kyle, and Myself feel about moderation on this board is that you shouldn't ever see moderators doing their thing. We have a good group of people over here and feel that we do a pretty good job of providing a user friendly environment while not trying to be too overboard about what people say or how they say it.

Thank you all for the support that you have given to us over the last couple of years.

Being a Jeep fanatic, I joined several forums. The friendly attitude kept drawing me back to WF. I was honored when I was shown the moderator's secret hand shake. (although I do remember something about having to wash the other mod's Jeeps) It has always been clear what the standards and expectations are, here at WF. The Admin and Mods will maintain this atmosphere so all Jeepers feel the love.

This is my second home and feel all are my friend
...now let's go wheel'n

(Loud Applause)

I've been on church based forums, Pirate, and TundraSolutions (for my Sequoia), and this is the best mannered, most informative, easiest to get along with group of forum members I have encountered. In fact, that the Mods & Admins haven't banned me yet shows how patient some people can be. (Thanks, I'll try to be more sedate, I promise).

Really? Amy and I have been admins at a popular gaming site for about 5 years,
You're exactly right.

We had been through a few Jeep forums looking for technical info when we got Amy's TJ but I never stuck around due to the "mine is bigger than yours so you don't count" atmosphere, I didn't understand why Amy kept coming back to this site until she had her hospital stay.
The outpouring of support from this site for someone none of you had ever met was amazing.

They arent free? oh god... I have posted on forums along time, and seen a lot of forums communities die because of poor leadership. This one seems to be going in the right direction.

Two thumbs up aswell
