Flame suit on

New to to the jeep community... Didn't really realize there was such distain for Hummers until a came across a thread on this forum

I love mine, different vehicle than a wrangler for sure... The Rubi will be for my wife, she cant drive the H2 much because it wont fit in her parking garage, but loves the look... thus the wrangler for her. Open to comments good or bad. Curious why the hate.. Snob owners? Posers? Bad drivers?

I hate them because:

They guzzle gasoline. Need their own refinery in the bed.

They are miserable offroad. I've seen them snap tie rods like toothpicks.

They are nothing but a 3/4 ton truck under that body. Nothing truly original about them.

They are typically driven by people who want to flash their money.

They are made by GM, and therefore are the lowest quality brand you can buy.

But...that's just my take based on what I've seen. To each their own...

There are lots of factors... I think for the same reason Prius has become the face of eco-drivers, Hummers became the face of excess and waste.

Yeah, they don't get great mileage, but it's not like we can point to our smaller brick-shaped Jeeps as models of efficiency either. Not superb off-road in stock form... but then again, why are all us Jeepsters modding the crap out of our rigs if they are 'so great'?

Hummers were born of the military H1, when killing people for oil and blowing stuff up was cool. When people started fighting back, all of a sudden flaunting excess became uncool... for political, economic, and environmental reasons...

If truck-makes and Jeepsters can't stay ahead of the eco-crown, they'll be a target too... things like the eco-boost, variable displacement... needs to find it's way into a lot more models. The Pentastar is a good start... but just a start...

I get 13.5 mpg... Not great, but not too far off what some are getting here

Didn't buy it to go off road... When I want to get dirty I take my Raptor (quad) out

I have owned mostly GM vehicles my entire life... Never had any real issues to speak of

Thanks for the input tho.... Was just curious why the hate, about what I expected.

Different strokes for different folks I guess

I love the h2,,,i bought a new h3 in 05 and loved it for the three years i owned it.It was awesome in snow and not too bad on gas as it had the 5 cylinder.I wanted the h2 but my wife being only four foot seven she found the h2 too big to park(afraid to hit something)I know some people hated it because it was not enviromently friendly. But so what..to each there own..

I hate them because women drive them like a-holes with license plates like "PRINCSS," most I see are parked like idiots, and I've yet to see one perform well. Essentially, they are fake and the people who own Hummers here in southern NH are douchey.

PS There is ONE here that works, but it's an original and owned by a thirty-year veteran.

A couple of reasons people hate Hummers...
Many Hummer owners have them as a status symbol, and people who are into status symbols are typically delta-bravos. I don't mean to imply at all that this applies to you.
Jeep superiority syndrome: some jeep owners feel like they're in a special club and obliged to look down on any other 4wd vehicle
Forum group think: someone on a forum expresses an opinion and the sheep pile on. I'd be willing to bet most hummer haters didn't feel that way until the forum told them they were "supposed" to

You read my mind! I get about 13mpg in my JK. I can't imagine the Hummers around here fare much worse in rush hour DC traffic.

That's the mpg's my Wrangler gets. I've always wanted and would if it were in my budget.

I can assure you that I don't fall into that category.. I'm a jeans and tshirt guy who fixes what I break myself, turns wrenches, and mow my own yard

The H2 especially the 08-09 are very nice... Just like the Wranglers are very nice. Each one does certain things better that the other. Once you start modifying them all bets are are off. I'm sure that there are some H2's out there that will eat most Wranglers lunch. That being said, I know here I am at and I don't want to start a war.... I was just curious.

they re hated because they took an amazing vehicle the Humvee and soccer momed it.
its an over price over sized under built tahoe. if it could even do half what the Humvee will do off road it wouldnt be snubbed at.

I always thought the Hummers were too big. That's really why I would never own one (besides that it is out of my price range). I'm pretty sure I could stretch out across the back seat and not touch either door.

Don't really see the point... Not much market for a military grade vehicle for civilian use...

As far as soccer moming it.... The Willys was a capable military grade vehicle that without a doubt has been softened over the years. AC, power windows, nav, chrome edition. Some might say soccer mommed?

As far as price and capabilities it is a modified 2500 series chassis. do you hate 3/4 ton silverados and sierras too? Have you looked at Cherokees, Tahoes, Suburban, ect lately. I sat in a Cherokee (albeit an srt) while shopping for my Rubi... 65k everything is overpriced these days

The Wrangler hasn't lost abilities as it's added creature comforts. Can Hummer say the same?

Silverados, et al never purported to be anything other than trucks. Hummer used its reputation to peddle poor imitations.

its the capability. off roaders hate them because what they have done to the original. you say the jeep has been softened. my 48 willys cj2a was a capable vehicle but it wouldnt keep up off road with my new one.

now apply that theory to hummer line. none of them are as capable as the original that its trying to knock off.

you know now that ive typed that i reallize why i hate them. its a knock off.

every vehicle has roll if fulfills or a market its targeted at. what is the hummer lines targeted market? there's two in my parking lot. neither have seen a dirt road. i asked the girls that drive them. in fact one day after lunch one of them came in complaining that something was wrong with her steering. well let me look at it. about 2 secs later we had a long conversation about what 4x4 is and why it was acting funny while she was driving it.

and i love trucks. but they have a roll they do well. what does the H2 do? do tell me how much you can carry in yours with that full size box.

The majority of the people here are here because they wheel and build their Jeeps to wheel. H2s can't and don't wheel that well. They're underbuilt, overweight, and expensive. Pretty much as non-functional as you can get for a wheeler.

If you like them for their looks or their passenger room that is fine, but that isn't what this forum is centered around. We have a scant few on here that are into Jeeps for the looks, but the vast majority are focused around ability.

I don't generally have a problem with Hummers. There are some pretty sick h3 alphas on the trail around here. I just don't like it when some guy comes across the parking lot to tell me his Hummer can destroy my Jeep off-road. That's the type of guys that drive Hummers around here. Plus, the h2's, in my experience, are a burden to the group on the trails. I rode with one, once, and he got stuck atleast 3 times and it took 2 Jeeps to get him out everytime because the h2 is so damn heavy. Other than that, I think its a pretty cool truck. My neighbor has one, they are very nice inside.

that sums it up for me

An H2 or H3 is a ridiculously bad off road vehicle with a off road prince's crown on it's head. If you offered to trade me a HMMWV for my jeep, I'd seriously consider it, because they're ridiculous (good) off road. Slapping that name on a ford expedition or chevy avalanche clone is just plain wrong.

But it's incorrectly marketed as one, which is what most people have an issue with.

Chrysler has definitely added a ton of creature comforts to the Wrangler, especially the JKs, but it hasn't (at least not yet) ever become form over function. The stock Wrangler has become no less capable over the years, arguably the other way around.

I don't think anyone hates those other vehicles. They dislike when someone slaps a new shell on one of them and calls it a completely different vehicle and advertise exaggerated capabilities.

Your average Cherokee is 30-40. The SRT is like comparing a base Mustang to the Shelby Luxury and low-volume crank up the price pretty quick.

The H2 and H3 aren't terrible vehicles and I don't have any problem with people driving them, they're just marketed as off-road tanks, which isn't the case and bugs some people. If you're an educated buyer and want an H2/H3, by all means go for it.

This right here. While it may not be the best off-roader, I have nothing against the vehicle itself and I suspect that many Jeep owners don't. Yes it's a knock-off, it's heavy, etc. etc. That's fine, if someone likes it for whatever reason (looks, space, etc) then more power to them. It's probably just the moronic drivers which give the H2 a bad name, but the same can be said for other vehicles, such as BMW

I wouldn't mind hanging out with these folks...

Of course, you have a lot more of these...

The way I see it is, not everyone buys a 4x4 to take it off-road, with that said, I bet half of the members here have taken their Jeep off-road or even plan to.

I personally liked the H1. The H2 & H3 not so much but the H1 was a good looking vehicle - totally impractical but a nice looking rig. A local utility that my previous employer had as a client kept several in its fleet & the line men swore by it since it could follow some difficult power line alignments where the Bronco's just could not go. The mechanics hated them though. Doing a motor required complete disassembly of the front end from what they told me, and they did replace them from time to time.

I think you have that last part backwards Mitch.. I see far more mallcrawlerish Jeeps that get ooh'd and ahh'd around here.. Go look in the tj forum and tell me if you see more form over function threads lol. The most talked about thing on this forum has got to be plasti dip and duratracs, and I'm sorry if i offend anyone but come on,, that's form over function if I've ever heard it lol
