Winter driving stories.

last night here in Ohio we got a pretty nice winter storm. Had some fun playing in the snow with my jeep. =D kept it safe and didn't fool around too much. Later that night I went to stay with my girlfriend. Since she lives on the other side of the county I decided to take my 1986 Pontiac Fiero. Better mpg and I wanted the help of her brother installing the radio I got for Christmas. As I was slowing to a stop and down shifting the back end of the car jumped sideways and I some how managed to keep it somewhat under control. I skidded to the left side of the road and slapped a tree with my left rear quarter panel. I shouldn't have down shifted and let my brakes do the work. The tree only knocked a small hole in the body. I thank God I wasn't hurt and didn't seriously screw up my car. That's my experience, anyone else got a good mishap while driving on Icy roads?

Could have had a nice story but I'm unable to drive due to an inconvenient bout of pneumonia. Yeah, doctor's orders.

Mishaps... hmm two years ago I had really awful no name tires I got cheap for in betweeners and I pulled out of my driveway--slowly mind you-- and did a straight 360 and came back straight in the lane. I laughed and kept driving. Those tires are bad.

This year I am running MTR/Ks in the rear of my jeep, and they are one of the worst snow tires I have ever run. Way worse than my duratracs. so I am slightly disappointed in them. However I can go pretty well with my aussie locker now. I was running some trails two nights ago in some mid axle deep snow (about a foot with deeper drifts) and was about 4-5 miles up the trails going up hill, nearly to the top, where it was actually leveling off, and hit a spot where water normally runs across and just stopped and spun. Had a ditch to either side, around 300-400 feet of slippery down hill behind, and I didn't feel like winching. so I pulled a nice 7 point turn on the hillside and went back down. The fun part was every time the front end turned a little, the rear end went sliding with it. Made it very tricky to get the jeep turned around successfully. I am going to look into getting the MTRs siped if I still have them next winter. Otherwise on the road the jeep does great, just 2wd on ice/ slushly/slippery snow sucks with the MTRs. As soon as I hit 4wd the duratracs and aussie just destroy the snow.

I run 6 year old BFG AT's and they do great. Lock it in 4H and I'm good to go. If I would have been driving the Jeep instead of my Fiero I probably wouldn't have wrecked the other night.

My duratracs do great and I have no trouble in 4wd. It just shocks me how bad the MTR is in snow because it is an all terrain.
