I am here in the springs as well. A lot if the trails are open, easy and still a lot of fun. Woodland park never gets too sketchy but still fun for stockers. I want to run eagle rock and Saran Wrap again here pretty soon.
It should be on trail damage. Its in the fun treks book if you have it. Under the rainbow falls area. Its a bunch of steps that have an uncanny resemblance of moab.
Did a google search of Moab Hill and came up with a link on Traildamage for Illinois Gulch. After reading it over I noticed that it was rated difficulty was 4-6. I'm fairly new to offroading and when I saw this post I was excited because the other run posted for april was out of my skill range (they were talking recommended 3" lift, etc). I may be over reacting and please correct if I'm wrong because I really want to go but that still seems pretty difficult. My jeep is completely stock (at least where it counts) so between that and my novice skill level I just want make sure that this won't destroy my jeep.
Others here can correct me if I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure the only obstacle on this entire trail system that can't be done in a stock jeep by a novice driver is Moab Hill which is less than 100 yards and has multiple lines of varying difficulty or it can be bypassed altogether. In my opinion this trail network is ideal for a novice driver in a stock jeep. Wouldn't be surprised if the entire trail system could be done without ever engaging 4WD. Unless I'm confusing this with another trail system this is the perfect place for a novice driver in a stock Jeep. Any other opinions on this assessment?
That hill with shelf rock looks like it would get some scrapping on stock Jeeps but of course correct me if I'm wrong. Is that the bypass you're referring to? I like trails that range with a wide range of difficulties and bypasses so you can play by ear. If this trail is like that it could be perfect for all. The guys with lifts can play on the tougher stuff and the stockers can bypass.
It's been awhile since I've been there but if I recall correctly if you pick your line just right you may be able to do Moab Hill (that hill with the shelf rock) in a stocker without "scrapping". That being said, yes Moab Hill can be bypassed altogether for anyone who's not comfortable doing it.
Yes chuck you are right. Moab hill is really the only obstacle on the entire trail. It is completely optional. Stock jeeps can either sit on the top or bottom of the hill and watch the crazies try to get up the hill. The trail is Illinois gulch and is connected to all the rampart range trail system which is really long and has a lot of easy trails. I've done them all on 31 inch tires and stock. But I will have my 3.5 rk with 33s this time.
That is exactly what I was hoping to hear. I do want to get out and test my jeep, that's why I bought it. Its got a skid plate for a reason and as long as I can bypass things that are out of my skill range I'm OK. Beside I'm sure if I'm out with a group it wouldn't take much to push me to do it anyways, you know peer pressure and all, haha.
I think mostly I wanted to make sure I had the right trail and knew what I was getting into.
On that note... I'm in! Give me a time and place and I'm ready go meet up.
Learning to pick the correct lines, Putting your tires ON the obstacles Instead of letting your differential hit it, going slow... That's how you learn by going and doing. Trust your spotters even when you don't want too! We'll get you through it.

Great info. Sounds like I'm in. Sounds like a fun trail.
Also just to throw this out there. Is anyone up for doing Saturday the 13th instead of Sunday the 14th? I could do either but prefer Saturday as I can explore the Springs area after and maybe grab some food and a couple beers (basically make a day of it) whereas Sunday I'll be getting my ass home to bed for work the next day.
I might be in depending on finances for gas that week...
