I'm considering adding some rocker panel body armor but have concerns about corrosion over the long term due to trapped moisture and winter road salt working its way between the armor and body.
Interested in hearing from anyone who has had body armor on for 5+ years and if you've had any issues with corrosion and, if not, if you did anything special when you installed the armor. Appreciate it!
FYI…although I live in MN, the MN forum is not very active at all and I've searched for posts on this topic with very limited results. I know there's a lot of folks in CO that have body armor and it's an active forum so am hoping to hear from folks with some years of experience with body armor.
For what it's worth, I bought my 1st Jeep in CO and vacation there as much as possible! Thanks for letting me hop into your state's forum!
Have had the OR FAB side armor for about 2 years. No corrosion problems so far. I painted the holes that had to be drilled prior to installing the armor. Also, OR FAB has a rubber liner that installs between the body panel and the armor. I also used black silicone caulk and used a small bead to seal the upper ledge of the armor to keep water from seeping down.
This will be my first year on salted roadways so that should be the test. Also my brother turned me on to this stuff called sheila-shine. It has a mineral oil base and really keeps the finish looking new and stops corrosion. My rugged Ridge XHD bumper always had some corrosion spots at the welds, but not since using the Sheila-shine.
Definitely use some type of liner between the armor and the body. Some guys dry fit the armor and trace out the form, tape off the rest of the panel and spray the portion to be covered with the armor with auto undercoating and then silicone the top.
Hope this helps.
I haven't seen much corrosion around here. That being said when I installed my rock sliders I also used some silicone at the top and front edge. I am currently installing full rear corners from Rokmen Off Road and am using a small bead at the top. It would be wise that once a year the armor gets pulled and inspections and cleaning are performed......I am putting all mine on the annual maintenance list.
Also we use magnesium chloride out here and not salt.
Great ideas/advice….sure appreciate it. I have EVO skins in the garage but haven't installed yet as I wanted to do it right the first time. No rubber liner came with these but could either fab something or as mentioned in the above posts, add a protectant to the paint first. Just bought my new baby a couple weeks ago and have plenty to work on! Thanks much CO Jeepers!
That color with the black-accented grille looks really sharp.
