CoFam: Bull Park 22 Sept

Bull Park

We have done several trails up in the Boulder area these last few months, so I thought it might be time to hit one of the last few CoFam suitable trails down in the Colorado Springs area, Bull Park.

This trail does not seem to get ran a hole lot, but appears to have some good potential for our type of runs. With a good mix of rock, mud and views, it should have something for everyone. The end of the trail is supposed to have great views and has a bunch of "pancake" rocks that the kids and get out and climb over. It would also be a great spot for lunch.

Here are some photos lift from over at the Trail Damage site (if you have not done so yet, you should really check that site out some time).

So what's the CoFam part? CoFam is short for Colorado Families. There are quite a few of us that like to go wheeling with our kids. This means we take it easier and much slower on the trails. We like to stop and taken in the scenery while the kids run around and play. We also take our time at lunch meeting new friends and catching up with old ones.

So, if you are more into hitting the trails hard and testing out just how far you can push your Jeep or how many trails you can do in the area, this run is most likely not for you (but you are still welcome of course!) But, if you are looking for an enjoyable day with families that like the same things you do, you and your kids will have a blast!

So if you would like to join us on this run, here is the meeting and direction info you will need.

Meeting Location: The Home Depot (2250 Southgate Rd
Colorado Springs, CO 80906)
Meeting Time:9:30am
Lunch:On the trial, so pack it!

Some overview maps to give you an idea of where the trail is.

Coming from Denver

Take I-25 south to Exit 138. Head west on Lake Ave to the 4th light, that will be Southgate Rd. Turn right and teh Home Depot will be right there on the left. For those that need gas, there is a station on the north east corner of I-25 and Lake Ave (you have to cross back under I-25) and one just a short ways to the west of I-25 on Lake Ave (between 1st and 2nd light, but it's pretty small and can be crowded).

Old Stage Rd from air down point to trail head.

Bull Park trail

I'm in as a maybe. Supposed to head up to RMNP that day, but a trip out with this group is hard to pass up.

For the sake of the list I'm rolling in a Red Rock Crystal JKUR.

Yep, going to be doing that this week. Went up to Schubarth Rd today and checked that one out. All is good up there... just a little rougher with the new ruts.

I'm officially in for this run.

Tried to take the kids up Old Stage Rd. today to hang out in the low clouds and there were police cruisers at Old Stage Rd. and North Cheyenne Canyon to keep them closed. Ended up trekking up Mt. Herman Rd. instead. Hopefully things are cleared up by Sunday.

Yes, I tried to do a scouting run up there today as well. As you said, it is closed before you even get to the dirt part of the road.

If it remains closed, we can just run Schubarth Road instead and adjust our meeting point accordingly.

Add us to the Maybe list, please. If lift and tires go as planned this week then I'll be itching to get out, but we may have soccer make-ups that day.

Did some checking last night and saw an article that said the rain did a number on Old Stage Road. I'm thinking it'll be a while before that opens back up.

Quote:
Water also washed out a portion of Lower Gold Camp Road between the two tunnels, and it overwhelmed a culvert on Old Stage Road, carving a hole six to eight feet deep and 10 to 15 feet across, Kirshbaum said.

I'll be calling the El Paso county public services department, transportation division, mid week to see if I can get an updated assessment. Depending on where the washout occurred, we could get to the trail via Cripple Creek. It is a little further to go that route, but about the same time wise since most of it is Hwy driving.

As of now there is only a 10% chance of T-storms Tues thru Thurs and 0% listed for Fri thru Sun with lots of sun shine. It could reasonably dry out up there before the trip.

But if not or there is no way to get through to the trail, we will run Schubarth Road instead as I mentioned. I'll make that call on Thursday and post on here. If that happens, I'll "close" this thread and start a new one for that run... limiting it to 6 Jeeps total since a few places will be hard to turn around at with more than that.

I always wheel with my wife and kids. Count us as a 70% yes. The only thing to get in the way would be the military.

There is not an official group, but I maintain a list of those families that want to be notified about our trips. I'd be happy to add you if you like.
