DW - need some assistance

So I have the death wobble. Per this write up (which is great) Yucca-Man: Death Wobble I beleive it is alignment related as I don't see any toe-in.

"The front tires will be toed-in following most lifts, especially on the LJ, MJ, TJ, XJ, and ZJ because of the steering arrangement. When you hit a bump on only one side of the axle the tire will begin to bob up and down. Since the Control Arms are no longer horizontal, they will pull that side of the axle farther back as it goes down - this will turn the wheels slightly to that side. Once the tires pull to that side, the 'scuff' of the vehicle traveling straight ahead will slow the tire and begin the same process once again."

This is exactly my sceanrio, hit a bump just right with one tire at speed and it goes EFFING CRAZY. So what I need is a place/shop/person that can correct this properly and in my area South Metro Denver.

Any suggestions?

Good luck Ed just spent the last 6 days trying to get rid of it on my rig, everything was taken off and replaced it checked to make sure it was good. There are just so many things it can be your best bet is to start lookin at each piece of the steering and making sure it alls to spec and hope that takes care of it

I had a case of dw on my old Jeep and it was an alignment issue. It was fixed after a good 4 wheel alignment. I think big o did it for me. That was a stockie though.

I'll give you a couple links on how to do your alignment, its a very easy job to do if you have 2 tape measures, a couple wrenches and a little common sense.

You cant do a 4 wheel alignment on a stock TJ, there is no way to adjust the rear axle, it is where it is and thats it, if they charged you more for a 4-wheel G-Rocc go tell them you want a refund.

There is only one adjustment you can do to a TJ front end, and that is the toe-in, its very simple, you can do it anywhere and save yourself about $100.

OM, you are absolutely right. They couldn't have done a four wheel on my old stock Jeep. Thanks for correcting me. But the alignment they did do fixed the problem. Sorry if I caused any confusion.

I'm glad someone didn't charge you for what they couldn't do, that seems to be a growing trend among repair shops.

To do an axle alignment, you need all five links on each axle adjustable (this includes both trackbars) It is scary just how screwy TJ alignment can be. I squared both axles and ended up with no two links being the same length, in the rear the lowers are half an inch different.

OK, I've seen the DIY alignment posts before, I'll give it a go Sunday. Could it still be an alignment issue if it tracks fine?

Thanks guys!

Do you have a dropped pitman arm? If you don't with a four inch lift that will definitely be playing into the scenario.

I have a 4" lift and a stock pitman arm and no issues at all, as long as the trackbar and drag link share the same geometry it shouldnt matter

Well some jeeps do ok at four inches, some don't. Theoretically the the track bar and drag link should be parallel. On Brenden's jeep slope on the draglink is .21, on the track bar it's .25. Combine that with a bad scrub radius, very worn tires and a sensitivity to bumpsteer and you are looking at a grand in parts just to unsnarl the mess. Which he doesn't have. You are very fortunate.

Yes, highly socially unmotivated, I feel no reason whatsoever to pay lip service to drivel. If you have something constructive to add I would appreciate it. Somehow "my rig works, why doesn't everyone else's?" just doesn't cut it. If you can explain to me how I can square his front axle, drop both draglink and track bar to spec, change his scuff radius and put meat on his tires without spending any money I would really like to hear it. Perhaps you should go out and play on Pirate for a while, they would love you...

Toe in was one of the first things I played with after I tore the suspension down to components, checked for play in all the links, ball joints and unit bearings. Any thing other than the standard .3 percent toe actually made the wobble worse. The problem with exagerated bump steer is axle misalignment not wheel misalignment. To correct that requires five adjustable links (please refer to post eight). Not an option (please refer to post twelve).

As to your cheap shots, no I do not have all the answers, no I cannot perform miracles, and no, I have seen no one else jumping in with anything constructive. I can only do as much as I can within the parameters I am given, which in this case was nothing. I do not feel that my aggression is misplaced in the slightest. I think that you are as deserving of it as anyone I've ever had the misfortune to encounter.

If you have anything to suggest other than the obvious, which has has already been dealt with ad nauseum, please do so. But since your jeep is perfection personified how would you know how to deal with a problem? I have discussed this with a number of people who I actually respect, no go, short of a miracle. Now would you please stop being such a twit and go away?

Uh, Barrie, we went through all of this last night. Would you please explain to me exactly what the issue is? Whiteyj said nothing more than knock it off. Why are you jumping in after the fact? Yeah, I think a lot of the rules of this forum are silly, but I like the people on the Colorado forum, that is the only reason I am here at all.
