Sorry to hear that.

Maybe this will help you: Craigslist 3.8l less than 40k for $400.

That royally sucks, John. Hopefully it'll be just a shortblock, and the heads are ok.

Well... the nice thing about this motor being such a turd, is that there are ones like this that have been pulled that aren't worth much.

It'd be hard to pass up a motor for $400 even though it would be nice to upgrade... it's just so dam expensive to do a swap.

A Glimmer of Hope

The guy from the local Jeep Dealership called me back this evening and said that Chrysler is willing to warranty it provided I get it to the dealership and they have their mechanics tear it down to the point of failure. If at that point its deemed a mechanical defect they will warranty it for me.

I'm seriously impressed with this guy at Vista Jeep as I didn't even buy it from him nor have I even met him but he has gone out of his way to call in a favor on my behalf. Cross your fingers for me that it comes back as a mechanical defect and gets taken care of. They should have a diagnosis by Thursday.

That is so good to hear this. I like to hear positive things about the auto industry.

You sir are a lucky man if I've ever seen one. Actions this awesome don't seem to happen very often, especially from people you don't even know.

Best of luck with everything.

That is really good news John! Considering it's a thrown rod I can't see that it could be anything but mechanical failure. Unless you have a drag racing habit that you haven't told us about

Major probs to that guy. From the sounds of it, it had to be a defect.

Ed I've followed John on the mountain so I have to say the drag racing habit isn't necessarily out of the question here...

That's great news John, keep us posted. Wish all dealerships, auto mechanics and such were as willing to try and work with you. If this guy comes through though he may have gained a whole forum full of new customers!!

Great news John. If they do warranty the engine see if you can sweet talk them into dropping in a 3.6

Hopefully everything works out John.
Would be awesome if it's all taken care of under warranty....we've a got a date with lift kits to keep so we have time to test them before Jeeptober!

Who are you talking to over at Vista?

I've had pretty poor luck in the past dealing with my Cummins there, but if there's someone there that's worth a crap, that makes all the difference!

I talked with Tim in Finance. He handles all their warranty issues so he's not a sales or a service guy.

If by some chance they don't come through, contact trail Jeeps in Boulder, they've got a ton of them at their shop from doing hemi swaps... they seem like pretty good guys to deal with.

They are great guys to deal with and do great work. They are the ones I got your spare tire carrier from. If they don't warranty your motor let me know and I will get you in touch with them.

Maybe they can give him one as "charity" and use it for a tax write off before the end of the year.

I think that sounds like the best idea really... We'll have to give them a call on that

Well off the record the guy says I'm good to go, he has to wait for confirmation from his rep on the East Coast but said it shouldnt be a problem considering the mechanics who tore it down said the engine was totally and utterly destroyed and was completley full of all fluids at the time of failure. He actually said its not terribly uncommon with these underpowered engines. He says 5% of engines have this issue and that Rod #3 failed.
I really pushed my limits and asked if there was any chance of throwing a 3.6L in ther and he got a pretty good laugh outta that and said this was a gift as is. I can appreciate that but figure you don't get what tyou don't ask for and I never expected this guy to help me in the first place. He said I should have a brand new engine, block, heads, oil pump and anything else deemed to have been affected by this failure buy Monday or Tuesday of next week. Pretty incredible turn of events.

Keep us updated. I'm amazed at how well this guy has helped you. Be sure to spread the story up the chain and potentially even to Jeep Corporate. However wait until it's all done so that he can't get into trouble or it gets held up.
