Unhappy Fuel Filter or Transmission issue? Help?

Okay, so I have a 1993 Jeep Wrangler YJ 6cyl 4.0L automatic. It's got a hard top and is as stock as can be I believe. I bought in back in February and had taken it to a mechanic friend of my mom to do a one over. He found some things that were wrong and we replaced the big things right away and have slowly fixed the other things. Got a new radiator and a new catalytic converter as the two biggest things, oh and a complete brake job. But, things aren't so smooth.

As of late, roughly the past two-four weeks I've noticed my jeep driving strangely. It often happens at a complete stop, but have noticed it happening in higher gears. Basically, after sitting stopped at a red light or something similar, I will start to give my Jeep gas when I have the go, but my engine revs and my jeep moves like it's getting half or even just a quarter of the power to the wheels. It'll be like this for a moment, then jerk and get full power. It used to be just from first and then up to second, almost like it was stuck in neutral and first or something which can't be possible from everything I know, which isn't a whole lot sadly.

Recently, this past week to be exact, I've noticed it doing some similar things when going from 2nd to 3rd and from 3rd to 4th. It's like I am losing power and then it all of a sudden kicks in. It's almost like I'm driving a stick and screwing up my clutch sometimes, but it's an automatic.

For anyone who lives in Colorado Springs, you probably heard of FNJeep. I go there all the time and love the guys there. They're helpful and I will admit that I don't know much about Jeeps compared to all you guys. Well, one of the guys there said there's a slim chance it's my fuel filter is just so damn clogged that it takes time to get the fluid going at first. But he also said most likely it's something to do with my transmission. That's my fear due to the $$$ aspect of it

So, any help, any suggestions, or any ideas would be helpful. I'm a full time student and working part time till I get my degree, so I'm hoping it's nothing bad. Please help though.

sounds like it could be low trans fluid, if not it really sounds like a transmission issue. The torque convertor will act funny like that if it is low on fluid.

Tranny fluid was really low and we filled it today and the problem is still going on. So, where is the Torque Convertor and how do I get to it to check the fluid? (Newb when it comes to vehicles) -.-

it is between the transmission and engine, it uses the transmissions fluid.. so if the transmission is full so is the torque convertor

So that's out. Any ideas on what transmission issue I may be having or the cost to fix it?

it really sounds like a tranny problem, just to summarize you're saying the rpms in any given gear aren't matching the speed that it normally would be traveling at? then it finally catches up after a sec?

Might want to start looking for a new transmission, sounds like the clutches inside the transmission are going, which is causing it to slip..

well you can check out craigslist and see if anyone is selling one, my friend i talked to a bit ago might be able to get ahold of one and ship it.. you'll either want one you know is good (ie you drive with it) or get a junkyard trans and have it rebuilt.. then swap it in so your vehicle isnt down as long.. also a lot will depend on whos going to be doing the work.. if you do it with a friend helping you'll obviously come out on top price wise.

Used transmissions go for $55 at the self service junkyards where i live.. i'll have to research a bit more to find out if there are better alternatives and such too. i'll post back up in a bit

Thank you for your help. If you get anything from your friend about one, please let me know how much it will cost. Preferably a good one that works, not one that needs to be rebuilt. My dad and I can install it, if not then we have a family friend who could do it.

Also, about how long can I drive on it? It's my daily driver and we're in the process of getting snow as we speak. Expecting 12-20 inches by morning where I live and I gotta get to work.

check the jeep boneyard in COS. They should have some transmissions. Also look into a trans shop doing a rebuild on it. Very easy transmission to rebuild, and it will be all new and good to go.

Will do, i asked my friend about it and he said he knows someone with one out of a 92 YJ, which will be the same transmission as is in yours, i'll ask all the pertinent questions about why it was removed, etc. I'll let you know everything i find out beforehand. Have you or your dad ever rebuilt a transmission? i think rebuild kits are about $300ish.. might be something to look into as well

Neither of us have... But thank you for all the information and help. I really appreciate it from both of you. Thank you.

I'll probably be taking it to a shop to get it looked over to verify what's wrong with it. I'm worried, but we'll see. THIS SUCKS! lol I want to get on the trails badly.

So I had Christian Brothers in Monument do a look at my Jeep and sure enough it's slipping in third and needs to be replaced. They quoted me over $2k for a remanufactured tranny with labor for it. I know I can do cheaper and I was wondering if anyone knows how to instal one, knows where I can get a good one for cheap, or a place to help me get it installed? Short on cash and my daily driver, plus I want to get into the mountains.

If you could find a Good used tranny the swap is not really all that hard. it can be done in one day. Most of the Labor they quoted was for the rebuild. if you get a used one then you can save your pennys to have your old one refurbished while you are still able to drive around. you should be able to get a used one for the 3-4 hundred range. just check the milage of the donor if possible. As long as the used one is still good when you get the other one done it can be resold to recoop some of the money.

That's a good idea TJ, thank you. I'll be checking with FN Jeep on Tuesday when they're open again. I just am not mechanically sound and my dad couldn't do the install himself. We may have an old jeep buddy of his help if he's willing. We'll find out soon. I want this fixed so I can get out their with you guys soon -.-
