We're now booked and prepping for our trip to Ouray on the 11th of August. Want to run all the big name trails, Black Bear, Imogene, Poughkeepsie, and all the others too numerous to mention. we are hoping to run into some folks that may like to run in a small group, and will be looking into finding a local jeep club that may be doing some of these trails.
Suggestions would be very welcome and appreciated. We will run them solo if need be but a local or familiar person usually knows of those great spots you might miss if you don't know they are there.
Do what we do. Buy this book and bring it with you. It's an excellent guide for Colorado - South of I-70 in this edition. There is a separate book for Northern Colorado.
Got that Funtreks book and the waterproof map. Your right it is a great book, plus it gives you some online updates as needed. 3rd edition is the one we have.
good advice, was just looking to see if some other folks were going to be heading that way.
It's possible I might be out there around that time for an extended weekend. I just don't know what the dates will be this far out. We have been 5 times in the last 4 years and this will be the first year we don't have a family vacation planned to Ouray... so I'm looking for a way I can get down there for a "quick" weekend. lol
I have a potential trip planned to Ouray in September. I'm thinking of changing it to sometime in August. Maybe the dates you are planning. There are a bunch of Colorado guys/ladies going in July but I don't think I can make that since I'm going wheeling in Montana early July.
I really need to go back to Ouray and would love to do it with some fellow Jeepers. I'll be watching this thread.
Wife and I went down there last year in September. (17th thru 21st)
Absolutely stunning.
The aspens were almost at their peak.
Not many people on the trails either.
Something to consider before changing those dates.
Will be there 13th through the 19th. Ran Blackbear, Imogene, Porphyry and a couple others last year. Will skip Poughkeepsie again this year as I enjoy a bit of a challenge, but a non-eventful 17 hour drive home with the wife and trailer even more.
If interested in meeting up, PM me in early August.
I am heading for Ouray tomorrow morning. I live in Louisiana so it will be a 1,300 mile, 20 hour journey. This will be my 18th time to make this trek and I never get tired of it. I think Imogene will still be closed next week, but there will be plenty of other trails to explore. I wanted to go in July, but I had to go when schedules permit me to go.
OPEN TO 4X4 TRAFFIC:
YANKEE BOY BASIN Easy to Moderate.*The trail is open, but muddy and slushy past the Revenue up to the Twin Falls. Expect narrow passage from the Governor turn off for several hundred yards. The trail will remain impassable to 4×4 traffic beyond the restrooms and waterfall until late June.

ENGINEER PASS* *Moderate to Difficult. The trail is OPEN and passable from Animas through Mineral Point and down into Lake City. *However, a*large rock slide on the shelf road about a mile up from HWY 550 has the Ouray side CLOSED.
