Holy Cross - 07/04/2014

Had an opportunity to revisit the Holy Cross Trail south of Vail in the Holy Cross Wilderness. We had previously done this trail September 2013 but didn't complete due to some encountered snow. This visit we got all the way to the ghost town of Holy Cross City and Cleveland Rock.I experienced my first major trail damage: a broken passenger-side shaft on my high-pinion D30. The U-joint broke and, because I had to drive a short distance for a spot to change it, I ripped the ears off of the stub shaft. Fortunately, I had an entire assembly with the shaft/stub/hub with fresh U-joints. It was about a 30-minute trail fix. I also broke a control arm bolt and my T-case shift linkage slipped off the handle, but it was an otherwise uneventful trip.

I came across you guys at French Creek. My Jeep is in the background of one of your pictures. My buddy had a radiator mishap so we turned around. You must of broke after the creek.

Actually, I broke before the first obstacle, right after the 1-way portion of the trail. I still don't know on what; I think it just wore out. We started the trail at 9:00 and were surprised no one caught up to us considering we got sidelined for 30-45 minutes.

I recall seeing your post that you would be up there. Too bad your trip got cut short.

I'm always up for going. One of the advantages to living close by.

I've read tons of stuff on this trail and it looks pretty interesting however I don't know what guys recommend to wheel it. After this weekend I'll have my lift on. Here's the specs and let me know what you all think. 2014 JKUR with 3.5" Rubicon Express Standard lift, 35" Nitto Trail Grappler M/T's, ORFab bumpers with Warn Winch up front. I'm not looking to trash my rig as I just made my first payment but if it's just challenging with minimal body damage chances I think I'm in. Honest thoughts please.

You'll be 100% fine. The trail is incredible. Definitely one of my favorite easier trails. I did it in my old tj with a 4" lift and 33's.

Did you end up going, Andrew? We ended up leaving Saturday AM since we had a good full day on Friday. One of these days I'll actually get a chance to wheel with you.

We did! Hit the trail mid day... Good times. Ran it twice sat (long story involving disappearing dogs when we first got there). How was your trip?
