Michigan to Moab

We are thinking about driving out to Moab from Detroit in May (50th B'day this winter)
Would like to hit some two tracks through the mountains.

It would be the wife and myself. Looking to do simple scenic trails. Points of interest, ghost towns etc....
Most likely, unless we hook up with locals, we'd be alone (I know I know)
Which is why the simple part comes in. That and we are driving the Jeep out and back.

Starting now to plan and looking for input. Once we get to Moab, I'll definitely hook up with a group in town.

Also looking for suggestions for Bed and Breakfast's along the way.

Thanks
Paul

Hey Paul,
A lot of the Passes out here can still be closed in May. Some ALREADY have 12-18" of snow on them. It really depends on the winter we have out here. Early or Late May can make a huge difference... It can also make a difference in MOAB too. Look at GROUPON for your B&B's out here, that time of year can be slow for them do to the melting snows. And Groupon will have some awesome deals!

Another thing is you may want to list is your Jeep's capabilities etc... tire size, lockers, winch... Wheeling out here is a lot different than the midwest. As your trip gets closer you may want to check here, everyone is itching to get out so trips are planned almost every weekend and the difficulty can range from STOCK to HIGHLY MODIFIED... Going alone is never a good idea out here, if you give people an idea when you're coming out, you can usually find a handful that'll go out with you... Good Luck! John

Hey Paul,
Can't help you with your questions, but I'll like to say that im planning a trip from Detroit to Moab as well, although it will most likely be 2 springs from now. What I learned from researching taking a trip from Michigan to Moab is that the wheeling is MUCH different. You need someone who knows the area that your wheeling in, it can go from good to bad to lost forever in an instant. Your best bet is to find locals as soon as you get into town. I plan to leave Michigan, go straight to Colorado and find some locals to take me on the awesome trails they have there, and then from there go to Moab. Hope everything works out for you, have fun and let me know how everything goes, and I'll see you around town.

It's looking like later in May.

I have a '13 2 dr Moab edition.
285's 2 in lift, disco's, limited slip.
6 speed, 3:73 gears.

This replaced my '04 TJ with about the same setup.

Agree with the other posts. We could very well still have deep snow drifts at higher elevations. It'd usually why we plan trails around the weather to get a longer trail season . Also, you might want to take a look at trail damage to see what kind of trails you might want to run. I have 33's and 3.07 with discos and can run up to a rating of 7 to mid 8 if I were going with TD's website. And yes, after the trails close and the season is over, everyone wants to hit the trails as soon as possible lol.

If you can postpone until June, you might have better luck. Yes, there can still be snow in June, but many trails have a defacto June 15 opening even if they are clear of snow.

Another website to research is staythetrail.org. I like this website because if gives you access to the MVUM of the area you are interested in and overlays it on Google Maps. The MVUM will show which trails are closed in the winter and the dates the routes are open.

You gotta find a balance between trails being open here in CO...and LOT are open year round and... the temps you'll encounter when you get to Moab. The later in the year you go to Moab the HOTTER it'll be!

I think we may drive through to Moab. Stopping along 70 for night #2 somewhere in the mountains away from lights. thinking between Denver and Aspen.
Have to find a place with a outdoor hot tub to enjoy the stars.

I'm even up for paved two lanes through the area.

Are you looking to camp or stay in a hotel? I would suggest Breckenridge/Frisco as a great place to stop.... Very short detour (15-20 minutes off I-70 and cheaper than vail. Also much more historic and less expensive.... Then again, I'm bias hence I moved here!

We'll do cheap hotels on the drive out, and we booked a B&B in town at Moab.
