Need help . . .

Hey all,

I have waiting in boxes, just begging to be installed, a TF 2.5 lift with Bilstein 5100 shocks on a "12" JK. Unfortunately I have no garage or tools to install (also lacking experience,) but really wishes to learn. I live in Aspen and can find nobody that is able to help with some experience. I am asking the Colorado Jeep community if either they live close or by some degree of separation knows of someone that may be of help. The closest shop is in Rifle and they want $800. I would rather bloody my gums and turn bolts with my teeth than pay that. I am willing to travel for help and will come with gifts in hand (let me know your flavor). The weather is getting nice and I am wanting to hit the trails. Thanks in advance,

Sucks you are in Aspen! I am all the way in Westy. I lifted my Jeep and a buddys and wouldn't mind spending half a day on the weekend helping you. I love doing that stuff, it gives me something to do. Problem is I have a little one to watch on the weekends while the wife works so I can't travel and even then it's hard to work while with the little one unless the Grandma would pull a favor.

Save your gums and teeth, it's not worth it Crowns run about $800 a pop

Shit, for $500 I'd come to you, install it in a snow drift and buy you the flavor of your choice. On a new JK that is a four hour job, even if you milk it. I don't know of anyone worth $200 an hour, although I've heard that there's this gal down in the Springs...

There's a guy on here in BV who I think knows what he's doing, maybe he'll bite. I'm in Woodland Park and that is a very long haul for an install...

There are enough shops in the BV area that you should be able to get a much better deal there. Check that out.

jks are very easy, the lift you have is simple to install. Just dont expect to much from it.

Sorry OldGuy I'm a TJ kinda guy. But hey I just might bite though.
We have a good shop here in Buena Vista. Tomken Machine. TOMKEN MACHINE - The Jeep Specialists You can call them at 719-395-2526 Vickie will probably answer the phone. If you want ask for Jeff, my friend and part owner of Tomken. He will shoot you a straight price with no bull shit either.

If not I am currently without a job so I happen to have plenty of time and tools that I might be albe to help. Now I don't know everything but I know enough to get stuff done. Let me know if you want to do something. Oh and I do have a garage so I don't have to work in the driveway.

Thanks BV, I'm into TJ's also, but a JK isn't all that different. I figured you would probably know of a good shop there and it's not that far to go. I think that place in Rifle is delusional. It's a new rig, nothing to fight with so I just don't get it. Figuring $80 an hour that's 10 hours to do a mild spring lift and shocks???

Yea I gree too. Way out of line there. The guys at Tomken have been one of my advisors. When I did my axle swap this January I did it in Jeff's personal shop. He has a vehicle lift and everything I needed. I was VERY nice to work in a huge shop like that. His shop at Tomken has everything he needs too so he could probably get it in and out in no time. Unless he wants me to do it?

OLd Guy you are coming up for the Chinaman's run on April 1st?

Thanks BV, I wish the pass was open since it would only make it an hour rather than a 4 hour commute. I think the Rifle shop ( i will not name names) is used to the wealthy Aspen resident that does not care about cost. Unfortunately I am not in that category. Only other problem I would have is how the heck do I get 4 35" tires in my jeep. Don't think I can drive with stock 16" and no spacers with a 2.5 lift? There are worse problems to have thought right.

Yeah that shop sounds like heaven. I keep dreaming that I will build one, but who knows...

Yeah, I will definitely will be doing Chinaman's next week. It should be a lot of fun. I'm getting tired of my old dents and am in the market for some new ones

You can just drive it with the stock rims and tires when you are done. The lift basically allows bigger tires to be fitted. That does not mean you can't use smaller tires. When you get it done, drive it home and then put on the 35's. That way you don't have to worry about taking the 35's with you.

Well I have a few dents with Chinaman's name on them. A whole lot less now that I have some armour on it though.

I could be and probably am totally wrong but I thought it had to do with the backspacing of the stock wheels and that they would rub some part of the suspension. I think the sway bar is what i heard based on the 2.5 TF lift.

Ask the question on the JK forum and see what they say. I know on a TJ it dosen't matter. I was running 35x12.50x15 tires on the stock rims. It dod rub on the lower controll arms at full turn but for the most part was no issue at all.

The rub of which you speak is on the lower control arms.. For this to happen 2 things must come into play, 12.50 tires and aftermarket big nasty lower control arms. If you are just doing a spring/shock lift you should be fine.. Start saving for adjustable trackbars. To my TJ friends, doing a lift on a jk is easier.. Well except for the passenger side front top shock nut.. you may invent a new curse word. But being a new shiny 2012 shouldnt be any problem.. Honestly, just springs and shocks should be about a 2 hour job with basic tools. Maybe 4 if beer is involved.

I have some spacers if you need them.. I ran 35/12.50s on the stock 17s with spacers for a few months.
