Driving across lower Kansas today, we experienced extreme "hood flutter", did not know that was possible, NEVER happened with my CJ-7's..... thought the hood was going to gain lift and fly back into the windshield!!!!

Hubby has been cleared by Dr. to take the toll road to Pikes Peak on our non-committed day of his Military Reunion, he is now ready to drop my stock 2014 JKUR off at the nearest dealer as unsafe to drive. We still have to drive back to Arkansas at the end of this Colorado Springs meeting (faster than 45 mph). Therefore, I need to find a solution to this problem.

From what I have read, I need new hood catches and possible hood lock, but can you buy those off the shelf and can dealer/ shop install? Wednesday is our non-committed day.

Thanks for any insight into our "fluttering hood" incident. The WiFi at the motel has been more off than on for my so slow search.

I have found the hood flutter on our JK much worse than our TJ, but have no concerns of the latches letting go. Was it really windy when you were having the issue?

There was about a 30 mph crosswind and oblique head wind. Every time we met a semi or topped a rise, the hood went wild. I stopped several times to check the hood catches and they would seem ok. But when the hood looks like its got 1 1/2 inch lift....scary!

While disconcerting, you should be ok. I first saw it when on a long road trip with crosswinds and being passed by a semi. Hood appeared to have lifted 2 inches. Terrified me and I immediately pulled over. Everything seemed normal. After doing some research I have found this is quite common. I drove over 2000 highway miles that road trip watching the hood flutter and lift varying amounts. It never flew open.

You should be ok to finish your trip. If it bothers you to the point of wanting to cure it then I would point you here.

They have all kinds of hood latches that take care of the problem. I can't say there is anywhere in the Springs that you can buy them off the shelf. On the north end of town we have Fairicy Jeep at Woodmen and Austin Bluffs and on the south end of town we have Perkins Chyrsler Jeep at roughly S. Nevada and I-25 on Motor City Dr. if you want to consult a dealer.

Good luck to you and enjoy America's Mountain

I have sent you a PM.
I have the Daystar upgrade parts on the shelf and other options available.
Thanks, will go with the Daystar to get back home. Will give a report later on how that worked. Thanks everyone for all the on the road help. Will ck the more permanent solutions when home.

I live in Kansas and I know about hood flutter. I removed my spring, that may work other places but not here. I went with the rugged ridge latches. You can add a zip tie to you stock latch for a temp fix. I drove my Jeep with extreme hood flutter for months. You have the center latch and two hold downs it may bounce around but it is not going anywhere.

We had the "Daystar fix" installed, to get us home...& heading home via NM, TX, & OK Sunday. Will see how that holds up to the wind. Rugged ridge latches working on your hood is a great recommendation....having experienced a small sample of your wind conditions. Thanks!

Sometimes they have a bad batch and those wear out quickly. Happened on my 2012 after 4-5 months...replaced under warranty and they were fine since.

Glad the replacement worked for you. We thought about that but did not want to take a chance on the same thing happening on the way home. Our homeward route had rougher winds, and frequently meeting semis on TX two lane roads @ 75 mph. Not a Jeep/ D/C dealer on the route, till we got to OK. So far we are pleased with the Daystar...not a bump or flutter or lift.... For us, at the time, with conditions and options...Daystar was the best way to go for us. We so appreciate everyone who has been through "the flutter" anomaly before us with all the helpful suggestions and advise.
