Newbie needs advice

Hello all. First post.

I am a newbie. I have an 08 wrangler x, stock with the S package. I would like to get out on some beginner friendly trails starting next Sunday 3/4. I live in Westminster, but dont mind traveling. I'm looking for some trails that I can get on in march that are suited for beginners. I would appreciate all your wisdom and advice.

Thanks!!

-Will

Welcome Will. Colorado has any kind of trail you could possibly want. Look forward to seeing you on a trail.

Welcome to the forum There are a bunch of trails between Woodland Park and Divide that are just up your alley. Thought I could set up a run like that in the next week or two but we just got hit with another snowstorm. Hope to get out this week and check out trail conditions. Will post a run when trail conditions warrant. BTW like your attitude and approach to starting out. I think you'll do just fine

Craigslist

Look at craiglist, I just saw a great YJ in Grand Juction for less than 4k. I bought my YJ off of craigslist here in San Diego and had many choices. Good luck

keep us posted Ed. I heard that Slaughterhouse is doable now. I know it might be a little rough for the rooks but should give an indication on trail conditions. let me know if you want to go run it...

Will do, I'll try to check on conditions this week. A lot of the trails up on the Rampart are really fun and no problem for a stock rig. I just don't want to see anyone sliding off a shelf road

Have you heard anything from Denny? I think I'll PM him and see how they are doing.

My biggest concern on these particular trails is the ice that accumulates on some very steep switchbacks. Not too bad if you're locked or have good posi's but can get kinda snakey with open diffs, especially if you're not used to dealing with that kinda crap Be good to have two winches, one in front and one in back. Ah, the fun of offroading in the winter

ya, off camber and snow and ice is something I avoid at all costs. I have been spending a lot of time at RAM lately because of that very reason.

I hear ya. last weekend me and Mike went up to Lefthand OHV and ended up on some pretty good shelf roads with lots of snow . made the pucker factor go up. he did real well buut i was in front of him and I had the only winch. probably would've turned around but there was no place without going over. gotta be carefull this time of year for sure.

no he's been quiet lately. I hope all is well.

I'm good to go back there. if the weather stay like this and we don't get more snow i think that alot of what we saw would be about gone. there are several other spurs also that we didnt do. how did you feel about it the first time? being a rookie and if Bonovox wants go there who is also a rookie. we can turn around at the top if there is still alot of snow on our route.
Bono i posted some pictures of this trail in the trail pics forum. check them out and let us know what you think.
Keep in mind that the JK was mike who is a new wheeler as well.
here you go
Left Hand Canyon (Colorado) 2-19-12

I liked it except for the spot where I gut stuck But it seemed like a nice scenic not too difficult trail. Especially if more of the snow and ice is melted than when we went.

left hand...

...wasn't exactly what I had in mind for a first time. You guys no better than me, but I was thinking of something easier going off what i see on trail damage (a 2 or 3 maybe).

It looks like from your replies, which I greatly appreciate, thank you, that I might be better off to wait until it warms up a bit.

Don't give up so quick I'm not about to send you into something that you can't handle. Before I set up any run I'll do a preliminary run to make sure it is going to be safe for a novice.

You have to take these guys with a grain of salt Their attitude is if someone wants to try something, why not. I'm much more conservative when it comes to people just starting out.

It's tough, wanting to get out for the first time and having it be the middle/end of winter. It's hard on all of us, that's why we do stuff that is not always the smartest thing in the world.

Keep reading and posting, we'll come up with something. Have to, to quote a buddy of mine "I have to get out!!! I'm going nuts!!!"

Aw, we could do Carnage, we'd just a bunch of winches, and one of those mini cranes on the Really Big Wheels. Saw one out in BV one time, it was AWESOME! I asked the guy if he ever took it four wheeling...

If Seven Mile doesn't work out I am going to check out a bunch of interlocking trails north of Divide. I figure there has to be some combination that would work
The only dangerous thing on those trails is getting hit by a zombie ATV. And they usually just bounce off...
So that can be a backup if you wish
