No mirrors police harassment?

Last week we had some really nice weather. I saw lots of jeeps with doors off and no mirrors except for the windshield rear view. Actually I must have seen 6 jeeps without doors and not one of them had mirrors. I know Colorado law says that you must have at least 2 mirrors total.

I was curious if anybody here runs without mirrors and if they catch any attention for the police?

I haven't had any issues. The way I read the law, you only need a rear view unless that view is obstructed, then you need side mirrors.

§ 42-4-226. Mirrors - exterior placements

(1) Every motor vehicle shall be equipped with a mirror or mirrors so located and so constructed as to reflect to the driver a free and unobstructed view of the highway for a distance of at least two hundred feet to the rear of such vehicle.

(2) Whenever any motor vehicle is not equipped with a rear window and rear side windows or has a rear window and rear side windows composed of, covered by, or treated with any material or component which, when viewed from the position of the driver, obstructs the rear view of the driver or makes such window or windows nontransparent, or whenever any motor vehicle is towing another vehicle or trailer or carrying any load or cargo or object which obstructs the rear view of the driver, such vehicle shall be equipped with an exterior mirror on each side so located with respect to the position of the driver as to comply with the visual requirement of subsection (1) of this section. This subsection (2) shall not apply to neighborhood electric vehicles.

(3) Any person who violates any provision of this section commits a class B traffic infraction.

hahaha....I was thinking the exact same thing this weekend. When I do take the doors off, I'll just run without them for the time being. Then when I do decide to get mirrors for when the doors are off, I'll probably just get the driver side one.

Just pick up a long stem motorcycle mirror. It fits right in the top door hinge and you can get one for around $35. I got it just because it's harder to twist around to view the drivers side during a lane change. Passenger side is no problem. Or I've seen a few people that install a small mirror on their A/C vent.

I purchased the mirrors from a local parts store.
I bought a piece of 3/8 aluminum rod from Lowe's.
I cut two piece's of the rod the same lenth, 12" long I think
I then used a die to cut threads on both ends.
I cut threads far enough on the bottom to put a nut on top si it would rest on top of the hinge and the bottom would sandwich it on the door hinge.
Went just above that and used a small pres to put
a little kick out on the rod. Bolted the mirror on top.

I can try to get some up close pics tonight when I get home from work.

Hope that helps.

Wow, the law has changed since the last time I looked that one up. It used to say that there must be at least 2 working mirrors on the vehicle. I would have a hard time driving without side mirrors anyway. Thanks for the information.

I have a buddy that is with the local PD here, I'll have to ask him the question on if that is something they watch for and would cite.

I stuck a couple convex 2 inch mirrors just above my speakers. They are nice for seeing rocks when wheeling and can get you out of a ticket if you are nice with the cops.

You only need a single rear facing mirror that has an unobstructed view to 200ft behind you.
This means if you have a rear view mirror with a decent view, you're legal. I run with no side mirrors when the doors are off or if I have the tube doors on, perfectly legal and have no issues from the cops.

BTW.... I keep a printout of this law and the carry laws in my vehicle at all times. That way if I get harassed, I can refer them to the officer and invite them to call their command or I will be leaving. Any attempt to stay my movement for those issues will result in a call from a family lawyer with a harassment claim.

I didn't read all of the comments above. I saw the law stated. It is a good idea to keep a print out. But here's the deal. It is technically legal to drive with only the rear view mirror in Co. and other multiple states, however, that is as long as it is unobstructed which is at the discretion of the police officer. I have a 35 in tire in the back which does obstruct a lot of my view. I would say legal, but a cop might so not in my case. Either way I'm in the Aurora area and with all this traffic I wanted mirrors so I bought so Mirror/KC light relocation brackets that mount on the windshield. The Jeep was missing the passenger side mirror when I bought this so it allowed me to buy new mirrors as well. Works for me. Warrior Mirror & Light Bracket 1980-1996 Jeep Wrangler YJ, CJ7, CJ8 # WAR1495 : Amazon.com : Automotive are the Relocation I got and my mirrors are Jeep Wrangler Side View Door Mirrors Set of 2 : Amazon.com : Automotive I don't know what you are running or anything like that, but keep in mind any law like this is a discretionary call on the policeman so if he is having a bad day you you have a giant tire in the back, he may call obstruction and write you a ticket. Some police officers do not know the entirety of the law, which is basically impossible anyways so again, keeping a copy of the statute in your glove box isn't a bad idea.

Could always install a nav unit with a touch screen and a backup camera that you can turn on anytime... got it on mine and if I get harassed that I cannot see behind me, I will flip it on and flip them the bird.

Not correct at all. As TechLife quoted the Colorado Revised Statue, there is only 1 mirror required. It does not matter if its the either one of the side views or the rear view, as long as the one you have up is unobstructed.

Nice try but a no go. You'd still get a ticket as the C.R.S. has no mention of being able to replace a mirror with a back up camera. Not to mention the officer/deputy/trooper/agent that pulled you over would more than likely hit you with every little obscure law he could. You would be surprised how many violations most Jeeps have.
