*Official* US Warriors Outdoors Fun Run July 26th

Hi Everyone,

UPDATE:
The meeting place for this event will be at the American Legion in Lakewood (16th & Simms).
We will meet at 0800 for a 0830 breakfast provided by the Legion! We will leave for the trail once everyone is fed.
I will put an *official* sign-up thread in July but please save the date! It looks like we will have 6-8 vets. So we'll need 6 front open seats. Any other Jeeps on top of this will make for a great group outing!

-------------------------------

I've been talking back and forth with the guys at US Warriors Outdoors to try and coordinate a fun run for them with all of YOUR help! Together, we will make this a fun filled day for some people who made great sacrifices while serving this great country!

For more information on USWO go to:

U.S. Warriors Outdoors

This Fun Run is now official and confirmed! This thread will be the place to find all of the latest information regarding this event. Please feel free to post whatever you want on this thread. I will try to keep the most up to date information at the front of this thread. Suggestions are always welcomed but understand that a decision will have to be ultimately made which won't always please everyone, so please be understanding if your suggestion isn't put to use.

When: Saturday, July 26th 2014
Where: Red Cone and surrounding areas TrailDamage.com - Red Cone
Time: To be determined
Meet up location: To be determined

They estimate between 4 and 6 guys for this run. If it works out well, then we'll add more the next time.

We have a LOT of work to do I think to pull this off without a hitch. There are plenty of suggestions from them as well as us. The bottom line is, we need to accommodate some severely injured vets. I originally suggested Wheeler Lake but their coordinator was looking for something a little closer to the Metro area to make it a one day trip. In addition, he was concerned the trail would be too hard on some of the sustained injuries. So being flexible and accommodating we shall be!

USWO stated they will see if they can locate an American Legion toward that side of town that we can meet at and have breakfast before heading up. We would then eat a picnic lunch up on the trail.

I will be looking for people who know this area well to be trail guides/spotters. If anyone here is very knowledgeable about the Red Cone area, please PM me so we can talk. I have some questions that will need to be answered before we finalize the trip.

Lastly, the USWO wants to promote this on their next newsletter. Any input or suggestions as to what we want to call our "club". I told him wranglerforum, Colorado section, but I'm the "new" guy here and want to make sure I get it right!

I will leave it at this for now and respond to any questions that may come up.

Thank you all for your generosity in donating your time and your rig. This is going to be GREAT!EDIT: 16 JULY
Trailering your rig for this run is not advised! The return to Hwy 285 via Webster Pass/Handcart Gulch is still blocked with deep snow at the top of the shelf road. Sounds like St's John and Deer Creek were also still closed, so the only exit available is out through Webster Pass trail to Montezuma Road which has now been opened to the public. This brings you out to Hwy 6 right near the Keystone Gondola at River Run.

There is a VFW post 8661 in Shawnee on Hwy 285, just south of Bailey a few miles. They host breakfasts on the first Sunday of every month so that location might work. It's about a mile past the Platte Canyon High School, probably about 12 miles before Park County Road 60, the turn off to the Red Cone trail head.

I run Red Cone several times a year since it is pretty local to my location in Pine Junction. Feel free to PM me for info on the trail.

Great place to go. Great views and great wheeling too. Nice medium trail. I will definatly try for this one.

I suggest we have extra Jeeps along. It would suck to have someone break down and have to turn back. Not that that has ever happened to me. Are there going to be any other people coming along as support personnel? If so they will also need rides.

We also might need to bring something like a step to help get into the Jeeps. I know mine is high enough that one might be needed.

Part of the plan does include having extra jeeps/seats available in case of a breakdown. We ARE the support personnel! The director of USWO said he will try to make it as well.

A small step/stool is a great idea. I'll put it on the list.

One of the USWO guys asked if there was an area around there to do some pistol target shooting.

First, is there an area around there that we could shoot;

Second, would there be interest from the members to take some time out to do this?

Post up your responses!

You will be in a National Forest. You can shoot there...just bring your own targets.

However, depending on the disabilities, there could be mobility issues.

As it's on a Saturday I'll unfortunately be unable to make it. Love it when things like this are able to happen. 1 Day of joy and smiling does wonders for the human spirit.

Yes that's what I thought... I just want to be sure to do it in a safe area is all. And like Sinister said, might be mobility issues but we'll see.

Sorry you won't be able to make it. And you are absolutely right about how joy and smiling affects the spirit!

I have a stirrup that fits in the tub to assist getting into the jeep. It's not excellent but it definitely provides assistance. Would love to join up with y'all can provide seats or whatever. I can also loan out the stirrup also I've made step ladders out of wooden pallets in the past that work verry nicely. So I can make another.

Mine will be difficult to get into for anyone with a disability (Hell, it's hard if you have a fully functioning body and are in good shape)!

I'm not sure what the disabilities will be until USWO selects the riders. The stirrup option and the makeshift ladder are great ideas. I think pure manpower can work too if we need to lift them up and in. We'll make it work for sure! I know some of the injuries are schrapnel type wounds, head injuries, etc. They may very well be able to get in on their own.

July 26th won't get here fast enough...I really can't wait!

If we do the surrounding area bit, we could hit Wheeler Lake. I could likely get more rigs for that as well. I know that one like the back of my hand and would run it solo at night. I have not run Red Cone..... I believe it is a straight through trail and I'll have to figure out the best way to do it/go fetch the tow rig after the run....

Wheeler Lake was my first choice but the USWO rep was concerned it would be too hard on the troops with their injuries. He also wanted something a little closer to Denver so we could make it a one day trip.

Is your rig street legal at all or strictly trails?

Yeah I can see the concern with wheeler. Nothing like driving on bowling balls with great physical health much less have some injuries.
Red cone to radical hill and dropping into montezuma is an awesome loop. Or around the swan loop. Great country and not super rough. Mountain goats are usually hanging out somewhere too so that would be cool for them. Plus we can get a couple of smaller rigs in with the group.
Anyway, just my 2 pennies.

It is "street legal" but NOT fun to drive on the road. If we are going to do a straight through trail I'll figure out a way to drop the jeep, and shuffle to tow rig to the end of where we come out. Being that I live in Breckenridge, neither of the ending points are too far from my house. I can easily drive back to my house from the Keystone side or out Tiger rd, Go back to my house, grab the daily driver and run back to my tow rig. Toss the dd on the trailer and head home . Glad the option is in my neck of the woods!

I really like this cause and would love to be a part of it. Logistically it doesn't actually seem too bad.

I'm more than likely in, with me moving and finding a new job there might be some problems there. But as soon as I know I'll let you guys know. Until then I'll be checking in ever few days.

Personally never ran the listed trail, but I'll be alright. Might make a run up there before this comes up

Ok, just wanted to post an update. The run is still on for Saturday, July 26th. We are in their newsletter and on their calendar. As time gets closer we'll firm everything up.

The rep for USWO was thinking breakfast at the American Legion in Arvada. I think the American Legion in Lakewood would put us closer to 285 to get started. Thoughts?

What is you guys opinion on take some time up there to plink some targets during a break in the run (maybe before or right after lunch?)

The warrior count right now is at 6. So I figured if we have 10-12 or so Jeeps then it would make for a great run without getting bogged down too bad.

Any feedback at this point would be great.

Mike

Lakewood would definitely be closer to 285.
