Exclamation Old stage rd status thread

Figured it be good to have one thread we could go to for information on OLD STAGE RD.

So I called the County today to see if Old Stage Road opened up as planned. I was told: " No it did NOT! As of now the closure is indefinite and the work is expected to go into next year!"
The link below is OSR specific and you will see the end date is now 5/1/2014!

The road IS open from the TELLER COUNTY end...you CAN get to Saran Wrap, Eagle Rock, Bull Park and I believe Mt Baldy!

Hope this helps...

I was thinking of doing an Eagle Rock/Saran Wrap run tomorrow or Sunday, though I've not done them yet. If Old Stage is washed out, how would one get to the trails? I'd be coming from just north of Denver.

You have to loop around Pike's Peak.

I called El Paso Cty today to find out how Old Stage Rd is coming along. Individual I spoke with stated that it is currently scheduled to reopen May 1, 2014!!! He said the date possibly could change but hasn't heard anything that would lead him to believe there would be a date change!

Good news for sure. If it's not open, the gate code is 0214. Travel at your own risk, we did all the way to Cripple Creek and the road had no more damage. No reason it should be closed.

All,
That is not the correct code, the road is not open to cripple creek, once you get passed the first gate you can go as far as the beginning of the national forest where there is another gate with a different code. This closes the road from the forest side so I think you may be able to access the forest and trails by coming in from cripple creek but you will need to leave that way as well. The road is looking good however they still have at least a few dozen drainage areas to add/replace so that will still take time, I got the code from a resident who I help with the lock, someone filled it with super glue, I tried ^ that guys code it Dosent work and according to the resident it's always been the same. It's pointless going up if you don't have both codes so you can enter the forest. I was disappointed but hopefully it will be open soon.

As of yesterday the El Paso county website took away the may one open date and now it's unclear when it will open, I called the county thus morning and received the same info. Last week I took the trip up to victor and went down gold camp all the way to the gate.i hit a few 4wd trails and it looks like most are open. It's like a ghost town up there, I seen one cs springs utilities vehicle the whole route and no sign of anyone being on the trails recently. But the good news is the national forest is open bad news is you have to access it from victor. Happy trails!

Old stage Road closure is actually through the Forestry Service rather than the County. They are currently looking for a contractor to finish the repairs to the road. Contingent on how quickly they find a contractor and how much work the contractor gets done, they are looking to rescind the closure order prior to the Memorial Day weekend!
The bright side is they are finding a contractor. If we waited for the County to do the work we all know it would never get done!!

That's a crap statement!
ElPaso county is the most populated county in Colorado. And they are supposed to stop services to the rest of the county so you can have a short cut to Eagle Rock? I used to work for the DOT, and I get pretty offended when people make it out to sound like we are lazy. If you want better service, talk 300,000 voters into a tax increase so they can hire more crews. Good luck with that.

It's not about lazy it's about the difference between a job being paid for by hourly employes with no benefit to get it done ahead of time verses a job order based on a bid of specific Dollar amount and time deadline.
It's also not only about an off road trail. Either the road is safe enough for all individuals to travel it or it's not safe for anyone too! The fact that the Broadmoor, Broadmoor stables, and a few select individuals that have weekend homes up there are given special access pisses me off as a tax payer!
Honestly I don't care what government agency we're talking about, County, State or Federal, its common knowledge that waste and poor efficiency cost the tax payer billions! If tax payers thought their money would be used properly and efficiently my guess is they'd approve reasonable tax increases.

When we would get injured, we would get sent downtown to lick envelopes. Talk about waste. It was like zombie land with those lethargic people that hand out license plates.
The county has only three crews for drainage, one based in marksheffel, and two on Calhan. 12 people for an area that big is ridiculous. I've replaced many pipes on that road back in there. These recent washouts are a lot more involved for what we could handle in short time.
Maybe we could get the used tire fund that the governor stole to the general find, and get it issued to the counties highway departments. There's lots of money out there being pilfered.
So, I elect john to represent us in Elpaso county to get us more road crews.
Believe me, I've had a phone stuck to my ear for hours bitching at the commissioners incompetence.

They "persuaded" colorado springs lawmakers into not allowing it because it would hurt the military friendly aspect of c springs.

If you call the forest service they will tell you they have completed all of their repairs already and the forest is open, the county has not finished theirs yet and that's why it's closed. As I said before I've been up the road already the was out area has been fixed they are still adding several drainage lines. You can go in the forest from victor.

Just saw on KKTV news that apparently now: "Repairs are to start next month and are expected to be done in September."
Unbelievable!

If they are going to spend all that time I would hope that they address some of the safety issues on Old Stage. As far as I'm concerned Old Stage is the most dangerous road in El Paso, followed very close by Gold Camp.

As of 1100 Today.

The signs up to it still say closed for repairs though. So not sure what the official word is.
