Awesome Wayne you guys won't regret it. I'm am so incredibly excited for this trip. Sounds great about meeting up for a cold one. Going to be fun meeting more fellow jeepers from across the country. I still have yet to go to moab :-\ I definitely want to go for the Thanksgiving trip that is becoming an annual thing.

Given the reference to Black Bear Road, C.W. McCall's song "Black Bear Road" is worth it for some laughs.

I grew up listening to CW McCall.
I have both the albums you can buy on ITunes in my phone. My daughter loves his songs. We turn it up and both sing along.

Stupid question here for someone that's never done the passes but always wanted to. Is it cold up there in the summer months? It just seems the real way to see this would be top down to enjoy the beauty but seems looking at pics people post they are usually all top on?

You can do it topless. That's how I did it when I went. It can be cool but it's about 65-70 on top (about 15-20 degrees cooler than the bottom. Rough estimations?...)

It definitely has rained and snowed on us the first year we went. Last year wasn't as bad. But the storms usually move out pretty fast. I had my windows off the whole trip last year but had them stored in the jeep just in case. Even left them off over night because everyone in the hotel had wranglers so I wasn't worried. So just be prepared. Oh and if it's raining on black bear we won't do it. We lucked out last year.

I'm sending in my request now for "No Rain on Black Bear Day".
That should take care of that.

Rent a bicycle in Ouray or wherever you are staying. Haul it on a hitch mount bike rack. When things get nasty, she can ride her bike down.

I have to ask. Why no BB if its raining?
Is it because the Steps become to slick?

I agree with the previous post but one other thing. Be ready for rain. A typical pattern is that clouds up and does the thunderstorm thing around 11 or 12. If you are going to do a tricky pass, be there early and beat the thunderstorms.
Be ready for the occasional cold front. I remember it snowing on the 4th of July rodeo in Pagosa Springs.

I just read through most of this thread and would you guys mind if my wife and I hooked up for a few runs with you guys? We are coming up from Gilberts, AZ. Originally from Colorado Springs but been in AZ for almost 20 years.

We arrive in Ouray on the 21st of Jun and are camping at the KOA. Our first time to this area to 4 wheel so thought the KOA would be a good start. We plan to stay till the 27th and just want to run the trails as much as we can.

Let me know if you can take another jeep into your group. We don't like to get to far out on our own. We do have a 04 Rubicon, 4 in lift, lockers, winch, lots of recovery equipment, etc...

Thanks, Hope to here from you.

Craig
