Talking Ouray Trip

Had an amazing time down in San Juans last week.

I went with my wife and her father, who has been running these trails since the early 70's and lived in Ouray for a few years in the early 80's, it was special for many reasons especially to relive the history thru his eyes.

Wednesday - Rolled into Ouray and checked out the town and talked to locals about conditions and the weather outlook.

Thursday - Ran the alpine loop (Engineer & Cinnamon), checked out American Basin and Animas Forks. Got a pretty good rain storm while in American Basin and Animas Forks was SOGGY.

Friday - Ran Hurricane, California and Treasure Mountain. We also visited Animas Forks again in good weather for some better pictures and more time to explore the town. This was a long day but was simply awesome these trails together made up a fantastic day!

Saturday - Ran Black Bear, Imogene and Yankee Boy Basin. This was my favorite day. Black Bear... what can I say it was awesome and did not disappoint on the Pucker Factor. It definitely won't be the last time I run it! I have to say that Imogene was my favorite trail, while crowded on the Telluride side it just had something to it that made it an absolute blast. Yankee Boy Basin was nice, cool to see Coors Falls, but for flowers American Basin blew it away.

Enough of all the talk... Here are the pictures. There are a LOT of pictures, most thanks to my lovely wife.

They must have left before we got there, didn't see but one or two. I know that the previous week there was some sort of FJ event but not sure what. I know that Mile High Jeep Club is doing an event this week. We were there 7/23-7/27, I couldn't imagine what it would be like to be there and not have a Jeep

You were there during the FJ Summit. It is there version of a Jamboree. I have a couple buddies that drive those silly thing and were there for it.

Best place on the planet. Going up in few weeks to run Poughkeepsie, went about a month ago to run it and snow stopped us a few hundred yards from the wall.

I do have to admit the anticipation was worse then it was while actually on it, but don't get me wrong it could be disastrous if taken lightly.

We didn't get to run Poughkeepsie, Ophir or Stoney but they are already on the list for next year!

Poughkeepsie is the best trail up there, keep it on your list. I would recommend going with at least one other jeep and if you don't have lockers you will likely need a winch, especially if the trail is wet.

Yea the day we were tentatively going to run it it was wet, combine that that I have 33s on a D35 I didn't want to chance it even though I have a winch. We were solo and sure as hell didn't want to risk breaking something. I'll have an upgraded rear end with at least 1 locker by next year.

Make sure to do the loop with Imogene back to Ouray from Telluride, black bear was awesome, but Imogene was my favorite trail that we did followed closely by Corkscrew Gulch.

Just go back.

Left Albuquerque for Ouray at 5:30am Saturday. Getting there we ran Black Bear and then Imogene, arrived in Ouray around 4:30pm. Stayed the night In Ouray and then ran Poughkeepsie on Sunday, made it back to Albuquerque by 4:45pm.

Great Loop.

Albuquerque to Ouray is about 5 1/2 hours. I have done it in under 5 and also done it in well over 6, based on traffic between Durango and Silverton.

Have a blast, once you get your first trail under your belt you'll be just fine, there really isn't much in the way of real technical trails. Take your time and enjoy it, watch the weather it can sneak up on you out there. Safe travels!

I was in Ouray Wednesday, Thursday and Friday last week. Awesome as usual!!

I took Hancock Pass from St. Elmo to Pitkin on Tuesday. Got into a lot of rain on the Pitkin side but did fine. Stayed in Gunnison. Then took Owl Creek Pass. Four wheel drive is not required on this one but it was still a different way to get there since I have done Cinnamon and Engineer in the past.

I did Corkscrew but got confused on top and ended up in Silverton. The trails are not well marked on top and my GPS sucked. Wanted to take Hurricane and California but it worked out fine as we were able to see the train come in to Silverton. Then we did Ophir and spent the evening in Telluride riding the free gondola around the towns. We had a lot of rain and mud but did fine. Of course the sun came out Friday when we were ready to leave.

Ill be down there but mainly for a backpacking and climbing trip. Might try to squeeze a BB run in since I missed it on July 4 trip. I have to work Saturday before heading down so I'm not sure I'll have time though.
