Penrose system

Anyone interested in running penrose? I'd like to potentially hit them this coming weekend. Hopefully make it through all three of the trails. I definitely don't want to be the only person making the attempt!

Saturday? Or Sunday... id also be open to running it the following weekend. pretty open at this point.

Liberty is the longest and looks relatively tame for what it is..... Also independence and patriot. (Both very short but tough trails). Those two I wouldn't want to run as the only vehicle for sure!

Liberty is the most tame by far...but it is still very difficult on the 'stock' platform. I'd be down to run just Liberty but I didn't want to hold you back Andrew. Can't make it this weekend.

Anyone interested...I think 35's for 2 doors and 37's for 4 doors are a minimum on Liberty. I smashed about every frame mount, rubbed my belly and gas skid's often, broke a control arm (in half), dented my hard top, etc. Plan on winching. Basically there are rocks as big as 35's scattered throughout the whole trail which is pretty tight with low hanging trees that force you where you wouldn't always choose to go. It is fun though if your willing to accept body damage.

Not my pic...but it represents the trail well. This is what most of the Liberty trail is like. I can post more up if anyone is interested.

Sounds killer! I can't wait to run it! How did you break a control arm in half!? That's crazy!!

I should have said 'bent' in half...and I'm not exactly sure. Just sharp rocks every where and the don't mix well with stock arms. George and I are planning a trip...I'll give you more details later.

I do want to run Penrose but I need to work on my trailer this weekend. Blew a tire coming back from the Dakota Territory Challenge and need to do some maintanence to it apparantly.

Just to clarify, looking to run the Patriot trail, then run the others, if possible. My car is a off road rig only, (full hydro, 60's, 40's etc.)
Patriot can be a tough but good trail. Ran it in the rain once, that was fun.

In a perfect world, I would run Penrose on a Saturday then Carnage on Sunday. Since I'm driving from North Denver, I would just Hotel it Saturday. Assuming I don't break anything..

I'm open to the order I run the trails.... I'm built similar to you, v8, d60/d70, 40's.... But full hydro will be going on soon! Mine is street able but doesn't like it.... Haha. I had a few friends at territory this year.. Looked intense!

Andrew (BreckenridgeTJ) this is Matt (patchzx7r), Matt this is Andrew! Now that's over I would love to go with you guys, but I'm kind of anti-rock rash right now and from the pictures on trail damage it looks pretty intense. Depending on when you guys go, I may just cop a ride with Matt.

A couple guys are running it tomorrow at the crack of dawn, but are sticking to liberty.... Terry, I think you'd be fine on that one... Another group is going on sunday to run the entire system....

Like Andrew said...you should be fine if you want to run Liberty with our group and then decide if you want to do Patriot.

Meeting George and Gianni in castle rock at 7:30.

This is shaping up to be next weekend for me. I'll drive down to Penrose Saturday morning and then once we're done there, drive to BV and spend the night to wheel Carnage on Sunday.

Terry is always welcome to ride-along!

I'm out for tomorrow..... I had a leaking brake booster.... pulled it, and returned it as a core and popped in a new one..... never pulled a brake line... pedal feel went out the window and got super squishy.... (but worked).... popped in a new e350 master cylinder, brake feel is semi improved but brakes don't work..... thinking the booster is bad. Either way I need to try and sort it out tomorrow but have some friends going Sunday so we'll run the trifecta (assuming I'm not hosed until monday waiting on the new booster)... I'd be game for Carnage the following weekend though! Then the jeep is going under the knife to prep for the oct moab trip... (hopefully full hydro, a new front driveshaft since mine started rattling 2 runs ago, and since i'm swapping the shaft, why not stretch the front another 4 inches or so? I'll probably skip penrose next week if I do it this weekend, but would most likely be up for both assuming I get it sorted tomorrow....

If next weekend is a two day trip, I'll probably just camp at the trailhead for Carnage..

Sounds like a lot to do while sprinkling in some wheeling in between!

Good luck and if everything goes well, we'll see you next weekend.

Thought I'd post some pics from our trip. We had an amazing day for the most part with most of use seeing at least some body and or armor abuse. For me Liberty is the hardest trail I run in CO. It's not extreme but it is no slouch as you usually learn your first time running it. Everything was great on the way down and we spent some time walking around Patriot and Indy.

The way up wasn't so easy. I got stuck going up the V and was winching myself out...at the same time Justin got high centerd on a rock about the size of an office desk. Considering there was no way my TJ was gonna pull his 4 door off that rock I pulled out of the way to let George back down...yes, he had to back down a few obstacles .

So he pulled Justin off and we got rolling again, then bang ! He was climbing up a wall and we heard a terrible noise in the front end. Spider gears were done and I assume the shaft at the splines. At this point a two door JK (Clifford) had to turn around to winch Justin up with a snatch block. George then proceeded to tow Justin the rest of the way up the trail with a tow strap.

Me an Gianni climbed out the exit and I went to get some diff fluid and RTV for Justin while he was being dragged off the trail. Got back to the exit and they were almost out. Headed home around 8 pm and on I25 I blew a tire. George to the rescue again in what we now call the Orange Rescue Jeep !

Pics...

Liberty would only be, for you, any fun if you go in the up direction.

I still think it would have been fun. Up or down..... A least in between the 3.5 hour drive each way that I was reminded every minute how much my jeep loaths street driving!

Every time I'm down there it's a full day to go less than a mile. Just rips people apart.
