Just went down it two weeks ago. I thought it was a good road. I think that couple just got over their heads and probably shouldn't be trail riding where it's steep

Wow, rolled over at the steps, not the switchbacks. An inexperienced driver got too close to the edge of the trail and slid off while trying to turn around on the steps. The sheriff needs to remember that the funding for his department is probably funded by the tourists to the area, so he shouldn't complain when they have top respond to the occasional accident. At least no one was seriously hurt, so I doubt this will result in closure.

can't fix stupid. Glad they were ok but some people need to stay on graded roads or pavement. Just because you buy a jeep (or "gasp" some other brand of 4 wheel drive) doesn't automatically qualify you to head for the most difficult trails. It's Telluride anyway, they will just fire up another bowl and forget about this.

I was jsut there and I would be willing to bet the majority of people I saw had not idea what black bear pass was.
maybe the driver was partaking in some of the legalized marijuana.

its coming.
Already a lot of trails are closed.

Here in BC some of the best roads and bridges to access back country are owned/maintained by private resource companies and most of them get closed when the logging or mining activity ceases. In the past they were kept open as a service to the public but over the past 20 years the users have become more abusive and ignorant and the companies see no reason to put up with litter nor the erosion caused by those incapable of staying on the trail nor resist cracking the throttle and ripping up the tera firma leading to increased erosion.

The very guys on this forum posting photos of the extreme stuff... breaking axles, ripping up rims are the guys creating the pressure to close these trails.

:rip:

Interesting exchange on the Sherriff's Facebook page. Your article is on their radar:

Stay strong and true to your account, and don't let them badger you into conforming to their agenda.

More than twenty responders from the local Search and Rescue team as well as EMS, Fire and Sheriff Deputies were on the scene to conduct the 90-minute extraction of the injured parties. Lined up behind the scene were more than 100 vehicles.

They need to invoice the Florida couple for the expenses.

This call to close the pass comes on the heels of Sheriff Masters recent comments about other stresses placed on the community he spoke out against increased abuses to local camping areas and the massive amounts of trash collecting in the pristine outlying areas around the town.

As for the trash.... WE need to be more responsible and police ourselves.
There is no excuse for this abuse of our wilderness.

--------------------------------
100 vehicles in 2 hours.... they should gate the trail both ends and charge admission just like our National Parks do. $20.00 per vehicle PLUS Trail Usage Rules PLUS a Waiver outlining the costs for rescue. Why should driving trails be different than a water park.

Here's my problem with San Miguel County's stance on the issue: I recently purchased a 5-year CORSAR (Colorado Search & Rescue) card, to specifically contribute to the Search & Rescue efforts. My understanding is that funds from hunting and fishing licenses, as well as registration for snowmobiles and ATVs goes to this fund as well.

Colorado Department of Local Affairs - Search & Rescue Card

Per the information on the link I posted '...It reiburses sheriffs for eligible costs involved in the discharge of a SAR mission.'

So, why all of the fuss? Sounds like smoke and mirrors to justify a more heinous agenda.

I'm planning to hit Black Bear Pass on the 22nd. Hope it is still open, as I've not yet had the opportunity to run it.

You obviously have no experience with volunteers like Fire and Rescue guys. They have lives and while they will jump to save lives they have no desire to be called out and "rescue" those who do stupid things. Equally they fully back legislation which reduces the need for them to abandon their families and jump in front of idiots doing abusive things in their backyard.

I love it when people want to stick their nose in when they are not even from around here. That couple went right past a big ole sign that told them to turn around there. They were stupid. They did this to themselves. They should pay back every cent just as if they were speeding and got in a wreck etc. on any road. By this thinking I guess we need to close I-70 as well since there are so many ignorant drivers burning up brakes and putting "stress" on our law enforcement.
Putting a toll on OUR trails is one of the dumbest things that I have ever heard. Stay in BC and leave our fine state alone.

The issue of access to trails is relevant across North America. The issues in the USA and Canada are the same. And actually... I have family in Denver. We are there several times a year.

So if the sign did not work.... Maybe a ditch, boulders and a gate will.

As for a toll... if the other option is closing the trail?

Having just done the trail I do not see how it is possible to roll unless you were stoned, drunk or just plain ignorant. The trail is wide and smooth and there is no way no how a vehicle like a razor or side by side should even remotely have an issue. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGaJQSvn2sE
