uh oh, the tranny goes.

sooo, apparently the jeeps transmission is on the go. It's rare when it has an issue so I'm planning on just driving it until the tranny dies then just replacing it.... Am I a moron for planning to do this? Should i just scream DAAAAAN really loudly and pretend it's the bat symbol? Figuring i'm out for the entire season with this issue... totally bummed and likely just going to be the guy on the right ->

Also... why not have the worst week ever for vehicles. The Audi's engine was KIA by my lovely wife. Looks like we're just gonna replace the whole engine on the Audi.

Ax-15's (assuming that's what's in your tj) are pretty cheap and easy to find. Tons of people pull them out to do auto swaps.... I've seen a few around lately in the 100-300 range.... just make sure the spline count is proper. Not a difficult task.

If it is an AX15 you can rebuild it too. Did mine in my garage. Took a couple days to finish. Just needed every tool in the chest, a press and BEER

Really I guess what I need to know is if I wait for the tranny to "die" cab it/will it hurt other parts of the engine? If not then I can piece together a setup and then put it in when the tranny finally goes.

Shouldn't I broke mine in half on my xj and it didn't hurt anything else I picked up an ax15 for my xj for 75$ with the tcase

Issue isn't: what will it mess up, it is: where will it stop working.... Options become more limited when it dies on the side of i70 or worse, on a trail....

It sometimes can be hard to get 4th. About two weeks ago it did something it had never done prior. Was driving in town when I lost the ability to shift. I was slowing to a red, hit the clutch, went to pull out of gear and I couldn't... Well I could but when I pulled it outta 3rd I've never felt anything so mechanical. I could feel the gears grind as I pulled it outta gear. Then I couldn't shift anywhere but back into 3rd. Was able to move off in 3rd. Got some speed went to try and shift and much to my surprise I had all my gears back. Could shift without any issue.

Are you sure it isn't the clutch? I admit I'm not very knowledgeable in this area, but could be the clutch failed to operated properly and not the tranny.

+1 on the clutch it sounds to me like it isn't releasing properly have you checked the fluid in in the clutch master cylinder and you might try bleeding it If it isn't releasing then it will be almost impossible to put in gear when stopped with the engine running and hard to get out of gear when slowing down

That's the plan this weekend. I kept thinking that if it was the tranny then the issue wouldn't seem to "disappear" and be totally fine.

I tend to favor the clutch master cylinder also. Transmission problems are generally consistent, they don't come and go. If I remember right the early TJ's used a one piece master cylinder, tubing and slave, it's a R&R type of thing.

Yeah. When Jesse gets back from EJS we are gonna swap the clutch parts and service the tcase. Then the jeep will have a clean bill of health. Minus the fact that my suspension is straight dangerous now; as in I have real fear while driving it.

It's more of a question of what isn't wrong with it, and offhand I can't really come up with anything. That suspension should have been scaring the shit out of Brian since the day he bought it, he just never figured it out. It's no more dangerous today then it was the day he bought it.

Probably not. The three link he has in back needs to be completely replaced. For what he likes to do he needs long arm front and rear. It's good of you though to think of that Justin

lol. Ed hit it straight on. I'm actually at the point with it where I don't like my wife being in it. I'll drive it all day and love it by myself. But i'm well aware of what it can do. And thanks Justin for the offer.

We're hoping to have enough saved to do the suspension in a few months time. Woulda been done by now but buying a new engine for the Audi kinda ended that in a hurry.
