Welding rear?

I have a long wheel base stock Dana 44 however my carrier is aluminum and so I was wanting to weld the rear(weld it well) and I need to hear your thoughts. If it breaks its not a big deal.

Im not a pro.. but im pretty positive you cant weld aluminum to steel. At least not without some serious equipment and a process to match.

I'm surprised that is aluminum, but i'm not too familiar with newer 44's and have no intention of ever playing with one.

aside from serious doubts about how durable this would be, it would be almost impossible to get those aluminum parts clean enough to tig weld.

Okay I am confused.. are both the carrier and spider gears alumin? What is the dana 44 out of? I have heard of the center being alumin, as in the ZJ dana 44 but the carrier itself is steel as are the spider gears. You would weld the spiders to themselves so should not matter what the carrier is made out of.. but the question then becomes if the the carrier is strong enough to hold the welded spiders...

Are you looking to weld the spider gears to make it act like a spool? If so, they are steel and you can do this fairly easily.

Agreed... the carrier is a non issue in a lincoln locker if that's what we're talking about, it's all about the gears, which obviously aren't aluminum.

Your correct its out of the 98 grand cherokee I know the rear is used for a swap for a ford 8.8 but thats in a year to do and want traction. The rear is wearing down so I do not mind if the rear grenades on me. It will see a lot of street and dirt, I am not sure...=/
