Well that was scary!!!???

Well last week I went to the dump with my good ole 1971 Ford F250. I had been having fuel delivery issues so I had my buddy follow me just in case something happened. You know just in case it decided to not run. OOOOH no that isn't what it wanted to do. In stead I had noticed that one of the brakes were dragging a little . Well that was just a teaser of what was really wrong. Coming back from the dump I noticed the brake smell getting a little worse. In my mind I am thinking that I will have to adjust those brakes when I get home. But NO that wasn't the real issue There I am just driving the truck at 60 mph and I feel the front drivers side drop to the pavement. Then I see the front tire pass me as I am pulling over to the side of the road. Cars are dodging the the whole wheel assembly as it goes against traffic. Believe it or not I did not loose control of the truck, I just pushed on the brakes and pulled it over. The tire did slightly graze another car but did not hit any one else. It did continue on down the road going into the ditch, jumping the fence and landed by some trees about 500 yards from the truck. Got a ticket for driving a defective vehicle and had to call for a tow truck. I know the guy who owns the tow service. Charges me only $40 to get it home. He said he was going to give me a break because I got a $48 ticket.

Well the dragging brake was because the spindle was breaking off. The whole wheel assembly came off the front axle. You could see where it was cracked before it finished at 60 mph. Funny thing is that the guy who towed me thinks he has the part I need too. He said just come pick it up. $0

I don't know about you bigger city guys, but living in a small town does pay off. Considering I know the tow truck driver/owner, the county sheriffs officer, the state patrol officer, and the guy following me is a county fire department captain. None of them can believe that I just drove it to the side of the road. It didn't pull or any thing. Oh yea my 71 Ford doesn't even have power steering either.

Sorry no pics from the highway either. I cant get them from my phone to the computer.

I guess my mad Jeeping skills payed off in the end

No kidding. The car that the tire grazed hit the rear drivers side quarter panel just above the tire and loosened a piece of trim. That was all on her car! Lucky. I did see a Jeep that it just missed though. I am sure that who ever was driving it had to check their pants. All I could see what the 100 lb tire center punching the Jeep in the grill.

I'm so glad everyone is ok. My tire almost came off about a month ago. Another 2" and that would have been it.
That's gonna leave a mark.

Gee Paula, you were exactly who I was thinking about when I was reading this story last night. You were a very lucky gal that day!
