Weston Pass

Does anyone know if this is still open? I'm heading up to my dad's near Twin Lakes on Friday and I wouldn't mind taking the pass if it's not covered in snow. Here's the link to trail damage.

Hmmm good question. There hasn't really been any snow to speak of in the area but not sure if they just arbitrarily close it on a certain date. I drove that back from Leadville this summer, definitely a nice scenic drive.

There has been SOME snow up high up there... doesn't take much snow for the wind to make a mess of a trail that high up.

I can think of a few spots on Weston that would probably drift in pretty quick.

Yeah I guess some drifting could be an issue but it was 50+ and sunny all of last week and there hasn't been any new snow to blow around. Anything that's up there has been baked for weeks. the last storm was around the 11th and only left a few inches in breck and I think it was even lighter to the south and followed up with 2 weeks of sun and warm temps. Just my 2 cents, certainly doesnt mean there isn't a 5 foot impassible snow bank on the trail.....

Yeah... not saying there WILL be too much, but a buddy just sent me a pic of near waist deep snow right by my house, where there's NOTHING around there anywhere but on that aspect.
I was thinking about doing mosquito, and a buddy across the pass from my office (Alma, office is in Blue River by the tarn) said it wasn't doable a week ago.

Do you have the black TJ with no spare on it that's always parked at a house on the northbound side of Hwy9? I see that jeep everytime I'm coming back from trip.....

SH**... I live in Dumont man... I'm not wasting my money on gas driving my JKU to Breck!! I'm the prick you may see around town driving a silver Jetta TDI with a "Discover Denver, STAY THERE" sticker on it. Sorry if I've ever cut you off

My office is on Horizon ln, just N of the Tarn. I'm an estimator/ PM for a commercial drywall company there.
Funny, that black TJ was for sale a few months ago for a while, I was actually thinking about looking at it, then decided I wanted the JK sedan!

Btw, There's no snow to be seen around here either, and I just got word that we're good to go for sleds on Rollins pass on sat for an avy class/ get together I'm hosting... just saying, it's unpredictable as HE!! right now up high.... dry in some spots, enough snow to go sledding in others.

That's kind of what I was thinking. Unless someone had 1st hand knowledge that it was dry I was going to take the safe route. No need to end up a story in the Denver Post. Thanks for all the feedback.

If I didn't have the kids in the car I'd do it. I'd just throw a sleeping bag and a bottle of scotch in the back seat. It'd be a win/win.

If anyone is interested, I emailed USFS. The Fairplay side said they were clear. The Leadville side said they haven't had anyone drive it in a few weeks, but at that altitude you can expect some ice/drifts. Since "drifts" could mean a lot of different things, I'm going to be driving the boring way. See you all on I-70....
