Wheeler Lake - Mosquito Pass

On Colorado4x4forum.org, I just read that Wheeler Lake is finally open to the lake. Makes me want to run it one of these days during the week. I also want to check out Mosquito Pass and see how it's coming along. Last I read it's still closed with snow on the Alma side. Anyone have an update on Mosquito Pass?

Just read on Bushducks that Mosquito Pass still has snow on it but is passable all the way through. Glad to see some of these high trails opening up.

Damn Dave....great minds think alike. Greg and I are going to Mosquito Pass tomorrow. I told him we should also do Wheeler Lake since we're up there but he's a little apprehensive.

Damn, Tomorrow is the only day that I can't go. The rest of the week is wide open.

Mosquito Pass and Wheeler Lake would make for a long day. If you decide to do Mosquito Pass tomorrow and want to hit Wheeler Lake later in the week, let me know.

Yeah I was wondering how long a day that would be. I think we're going to run tomorrow and then I'll have to let you know about later...

I ran Mosquito Pass on Sunday, July20. It is open all the way from Alma to Leadville. There is still a little snow on the Alma side just about 200 yards from the summit. It is a little tricky but it is passable (your back end will side around a little). Maybe the snow will be gone before the weekend.

I heard from someone at the Ranger Station in Fairplay that they are going to plow that snow area on Mosquito Pass because there are the Burro Races this weekend (July 25-27). I bet Mosquito Pass will be closed to traffic during the races. I don't know exactly which day is the actual Burro Race.

There was also a small rock slide just north of the London Mine but it looks like someone pushed most of the rocks and dirt out of the way. I was able to pass easily in my Jeep Wrangler.

I'm definitely running Wheeler Lake on Thursday or Friday. I have a friend from Chicago in town but not sure which day works for his schedule yet.

Hey Dave...we ended up running twin cone today instead. I can't do Thursday (annual golf round on segways with my buddies) or Friday. I'll look you up another time for it though. Boy was it hot up there today!

I stand corrected. Thank you Matt_G.

I think when the guy at the Fairplay Ranger Station talking about someone plowing Mosquito Pass this Friday (or somewhere there abouts), I must have thought the Burro Races were this weekend.

As far as Wheeler Lake. I'm available Sunday or Monday. I won't go by myself.

If you have never been to Burro Days before it is fun. I like going to Fairplay before the start of the races to take in all the cool burros when they are suited up for the race and then watch the start of the race. Guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

Hey MeauxBean,
I might join you on the Mosquito Pass run on Aug. 9th. My son gets in town on the 8th and I will see if he wants to go.

We'll be at the Wheeler Lake trailhead today around 9:45 am and will be heading up the trail at 10:00 am. If you want to join in, just show up at that time. I'll be in a Khaki LJ Rubicon along with another Red LJ Rubicon with a business logo on it. Hopefully we'll get down before the monsoonal rain forecast for today.
