National Parks Closed...?

As I head to california from maryland i wanted to make my pilgrimage out to Moab. With all the national parks closed not being able to canyon lands and or to arches kills me. I have been reading the BLM has camping and wheeling available to the public. I want to be able to take in the scenery, wheel and photograph everything. I should be there around the 5th or the 6th.

There is still so much to see and so many trails in Moab that it will still be a good visit. Not being able to see the arches will be disappointing but there is so much more to see. Dead horse park is a state park so it is still open and is across the highway from the federal park.

Angry Arches, Moab & Other Places

Yes, there should be plenty to do in Moab.
Don't forget there are back ways into Arches from the north that may not be blocked, but they probably are.

We were "trapped" at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. We were already in when the hostage taking began. Since we were already in we could have stayed longer at the lodge but we had a family emergency to go to.
They let anybody out, of course. When we turned around to photograph the "Amerika Closed" sign a Danger Ranger started towards us with his hand on his pistol. Sincere Obamacare hate.

Zion was "closed" but you could drive through. Despite the "shut down", they managed to pay someone to put police tape across parking lots that tourists were driving over. The little pullouts weren't taped off, but they were kicking people out of camp grounds. There is no RV pilot through the tunnel so forget driving a large rig through Zion. Limit 11' 4" high at the right corner, 7.5' wide. The radio gave a length limit of 17'.

It seems like you can drive through the drive-through parks without stopping and the "in and back" parks are completely closed.

So, basically, there's plenty of money to pay overtime to punish tourists but the government can't afford to pay someone to collect money.

What I don't understand is this. If rangers are temporarily laid off, why would they give a rip if people came into the parks. I would be pissed. These "leaders" who are all millionaires+ shut down the govt. no skin off their noses, they know they will still have food to eat. When elections come around again, I urge everyone of you to vote for a new candidate. Dont keep any of these a-holes in their job of screwing over the majority population. :endrant:

Southwest Utah is loaded with things to, places to go. Don't stay home just because the N.P.s are closed, PM me if you need ideas.

We just did Zion today. Yes you can drive thru and no fee. A Ranger will advise you that there is no stopping or hiking. Yeah right. People, myself included, pulled over at most spots we wanted too for pics. At one point to watch goats coming down the mountain side, there were at least 12 vehicles stopped right in the road. No one seemed to be in a hurry and it was all good! We also supported local business's in Springdale including the brew pub there. These are the people hurting. As you can imagine business is way down! We also took pics of every close sign we found as I plan on sending them to my Representatives along with a note. " thanks for screwing up our vacation "

I had breakfast in Springdale and then went up Kolob Terrace. There were several cars at Coal Pits, I heard no one was bothered for hiking that trail. I saw one pick up with a sticker on it parked in Zion, I heard they're just warnings. Every pull out had people parked taking pictures and one of the trail heads had quite few cars parked outside the tape. I go up here a lot and have never seen so many people, this is a beautiful area.

You can still enjoy SW Utah despite the closings!

Wish I would have planned it better and had more to time spend. I know now that there is a fuck ton to do in SW Utah and a lot to see. Sadly my roof rack broke half way thru bull canyon and I had to turn around because all my move was on top of it and I was trying to avoid an accident. Got it fixed at Moab 4x4 post. Then headed on my way west to California

We are headed to Moab next week and heard that Utah is paying to keep all parks open. Does anyone know if this is true?
