Soon to be resident

Hey guys, I'm mere hours from accepting a job offer just north of Provo. I was out there mon, tues, wed of this week interviewing and checking it out. Any advice on places to live? The job is in Lehi and several people in SLC told me it was a podunk area but when I got there it wasn't bad at all. Right now im looking for low cost of living and don't mind a 20-25 min commute but by the way traffic looks on the 15 that's 3 miles

I work in Lehi and Live in AF (American Fork) - I like it, but I'm also from a small town in Cali. The commute is maybe 10 minutes on a bad day. American fork has reasonable living costs, and is close to a lot. you might want to also check out South Jordan, Pleasant Grove, Lehi (itself) and can even try Orem. Orem and Provo have a higher Mormon population, don't know if that's a factor, the closer you get to SLC the more night life you experience. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the help! I'm going to be heading back out in a couple weeks to look for a house to rent for the time being. I like that everything is so new in the area it's going to make buying a place alot easier when the time comes.

No problem, if you don't like it at first, don't worry - it'll grow on you. Welcome to Utah in advance!

I hard the same thing that Provo is owned by the mormons, but never been there myself..

I'm moving to SLC in August.. can't wait for all the canyon fun!

PS: and I'm also scouting a wrangler for that reason.. but there so few private deals on craigslist selling it for less than 10K... if you know some other good place to dig a used wrangler for that price or less.. let me know...

If you're out there in August I might be looking to get rid of my beloved 03 TJ for a JKU around that time. It's a Cali Jeep so no rot. I'd be asking somewhere in the 9's for it

see that's the thing... i dont know how does all the out of state registration/ title transfer work..

and i'm baffled to see so many utah jeeps in moab every year, and so few Listing on craigslist. But loads of deals in big metro cities likr.. sacramenta, SF, and LA...

even in Boston it's so easy to find a less than 7k jeep never been off road.. Are they driving a pussy magnet or a jeep wrangler?

I've done it several times. I was stationed in Cali and would buy Cali cars and register them in Indiana to bypass smog. My Jeep is registered in Indiana but I bought it outside of Fresno. Bill of sale, affidavit of police vin inspection (super easy) and that's it.

My insurance coverage was for California. I maintained legal residency in Indiana but "worked" in California. I know guys who were flip flopped and maintained residency in their home state but registered their vehicles in California.

My point is you could go out of state and buy a vehicle and register it if you wanted. You would just need to check your DMV website for proper documentation. Every state is a little different. California requires a California DMV bill of sale... Indiana requires any bill of sale. I've even used hooters napkins.

ok. i got you.
I live in Mass. going to school in Utah, and the car is out of utah. so 2 layers of twist here. even though i bought the jeep in MA, my parents policy wont cover out of state case for more than 30 days.

I guess eventually, i'll just have to convert into a UT license.. huge fucking pain!!!

I wouldn't think it would be that tough, some places have student policies. I live in a college town right now and when I cruise over that way to get sushi (lucky college kids get all the good restaurants... My side of town has like 6 Subways) I see nothing but out of state plates.

I haven't even looked into Utah residency yet. Idk if they require you to convert after a certain amount of time or not.. Eek

Psssh... Not even worried about it then. I'll just mooch off of my parents address after I move I've got a really badass Indiana veteran plate I just paid for in March and I'm not getting rid of it till it's faded.

As for the sushi? I had sushi at a place in Midvale a couple weeks ago and the guy was really knowledgeable about fish and the ways to prepare it. He made some mean rolls for me. You either love it or hate it.

Great Sushi places in Utah:

Happy Sumo : Park City, Salt LAke, Provo
Shoga : Orem
Ichiban : Salt Lake
Koi Sushi : American Fork
Tepenyaki: Lehi, Salt Lake, Layton, Saratoga Springs, West Jordan
Hibachi House : American Fork

Utah DMV crap - if you are a student, you don't need to register your vehicle. mine still has cali plates (then again, I just moved back to UT from Cali) sadly, if you are working, you have 30 days. You can get the plates with a simple safety and emissions test and not need to switch over your actual drivers license (just don't get pulled over, or they'll lecture you, some rude cope may even give you a 'fix it' ticket) if you do switch your actual drivers license, they require a birth certificate and/or social security card. and your first born. nah I'm just messin. But they are pretty strict. the Best DMV is in Riverton, UT. Fast lines, nice people. Hope this helps. I'm thinkin Sushi for dinner now...

Utah doesn't care that you have an existing license from another state so you are basically starting over. That includes a motorcycle endorsement if you have one. I still haven't changed my license over for that reason and so far it hasn't been an issue and that includes one harassment stop by a West Valley PD and an accident in my company vehicle.

Let me ask this, how bad are the mormons in that area? My great aunt worked out there some years ago as a guard and claimed children threw rocks at her when she came home. I have a low tolerance for door to door Baptists as is and when it comes to religion I prefer to be left alone. Do I need to have Memphis May Fire and Devil Wears Prada on loop at my door?

i heard in salt lake is a lot more liberal, with all the college students, business and all. only 50% of the city pop are mormons.

But if you go to the suburb of Provo, dont be surprised that you are the only Nonmormon on the street. 90%+ there, no kidding....

But I dint think they are hostile people, probably just will try to convert you whenever you go. Only kiddos do thoses vandalizing, immature stunt.

Then again, that's what I heard while deciding if I should go to school in Salt lake..

PS: On my previous question: Ok so i got it I can drive with out of state license, but the problem is how do I get insured in Utah, with my MA license. Is that remotely possible?

Ok, just called Utah DMV, they said i dont have to convert my license, but have to change title after 6 months, which takes 1 day with all the paperwork ready.

Now back to the goddamn insurance thingy. any fella students tell me how yall get insured going to school in another state.

haha I am Mormon, but do not take offense to that. There are some extremes here for sure. My sister is a teacher and has a Mormon student who's mom will not allow to play with any NON Mormon kids. it's sad, but then you have a true practice-rs, who accept and love all kinds. Orem and Provo are the most populated. Salt Lake is definitely more liberal. you just gotta find the right people. they are out there! As far as Insurance, I just told Geico I had an Address update, they didnt ask if my license plate or actual license changed. I get mind pretty cheap too. So, I would just call your insurancem let them know you need to update your address... they shouldn't interrogate you or need anything else.

School wise - check Out SLCC (Salt Lake Community College) or MATC (assuming they have your trade. the great thing about out here, is they have a lot of Trade schools..

Rwill is right - it does grow on you - and that's coming from a Cali Farm girl from a small town.

We'll be moving to Utah in a week as well. Don't worry about the mormons. As Cwalch3 said there are some jerks and there are nice people. Same thing you see everywhere with every religion. Mormons are just people, treat people how you want to be treated and if they are rude then ignore them, that's how I have lived my life.

haha thanks Cunnart - I decided (kinda just like you said) that every faith/religion has its lame people and kook's - obviously you just see it a lot with the Mormon's out here cause UTah is populated strongly with them haha. TylerU - Ya pretty much. I just checked my policy online too, it's still has everything on my Jeep registered in Cali, yet my home and work and commute address in Utah. I'm hoping you have Geico. haha

well, that's kinda tight on time. Ya should find a temp, to buy sometime looking for the right house. I wouldnt wanna live somewhere for a year just to find out the neighborhood is known for raging mormons and car break-ins [which i read on the news, is common in some part of slc, esp near trailheads]

Anyways, enjoy the canyon fun! still gonna be 2 months waiting for me.
