4WD trails on topo maps. Are they really there?

I have been scanning topo maps looking for places to take my jeep. I see trails listed as 4wd here and there but I never hear people talk about them. As an example, there are a few of them shown on the map that start about a mile nw of the entrance to bachelor ski area. The one that goes west looks like it goes all the way to sparks lake. Does anyone know if that is really there or it was just there when the topo was drawn. I will attach a screen shot of that area.

To be 100% sure if a trail is open to motor vehicles you need to get the Motor Vehicle use map form the Ranger Station that is for that area. Most national forest have a policy a road is closed unless marked Open. So just because a road is there and on a map doesn't mean it is legal to drive it. It is a sucky way of doing it but sigh that is how they do it.

I might be a little but I LOVE my Jeep.

I use the Backcountry Explorer with the Oregon/Washington BLM overlay on my android smart phone and I have noticed that several trails are marked "Jeep trail", but some of those labels seem to be from a long time ago (old topo maps) before all the gates and OHV restrictions. So the Ranger Station info is the best way to go.

Most of those are just narrow, dirt forest roads. Some are open and some blocked off. We have scouted that area extensively and there are not many "trails" there outside of the Edison ButteTrail.

Thanks everyone.
I do have those road use maps but they don't really help for finding new areas.
I will just ignore those symbols on the topos. I appreciate the input.

Here is an app for ios that lets you download MVUM's and see your location on them. I only see the deschutes national forest maps available for download right now but maybe they will all make it eventually. The app and maps are free.

I know that for Gifford Pinchot nf you can go online to their web site and pint out PDFs of maps that list all the roads that are open year round and seasonally
